I have an old Abu 5600c4, when they use to be silver, and have used it for years and love it. Recently I have started to notice that while retrieving the line will slightly crowd the handle side of the spool. Any ideas or thoughts as to why this is just now starting to happen and possible remedies? Any help is appreciated.

Usually this is an easy fix. The pawl (most likely) and worm shaft can wear out. The pawl can be accessed by unscrewing the cap on the bottom of the line guide. If you have another Abu round reel it probably uses the same pawl - you can swap it out and see if that fixes the problem before ordering parts.

Thank you for the quick response. I swapped out the pawl and the worm gear from a newer 5600 I had and still the same. After looking at the reel closer, the spool is not centered in the housing. Also the spool drag is not working either which is something I noticed last weekend. I took it apart and the spool axle is definitely sinking into the housing causing the spool to ride deeper on the non handle side and bunching the line up on the handle side. Any other ideas?

More than likely it is the spool pinion on the left end of the spool. After years of use the small necked down area on the end of the spool pinion becomes worn down, not sure what the part number is but if you give me the foot number on the reel we can get the right number for you. There also is a chance if the reel has seen a lot of use the pinion gear holder may be worn as well. These parts are only generally only a couple of dollars each.

070111/21 Here is the number on the bottom of the reel seat. Where do I get these parts? Do I call Abu directly? Is swapping them out difficult? I feel pretty comfortable with most everything but I have never attempted this. Thanks again.

SF, you can go to the pure fishing website and order the part #'s right from your reel schematic.

Get a ceramic pawl for those reels and never have to replace it again....

Abu's are fairly easy to work on, and the spool pinion is easy to replace, loosen the thumbscrews on the handle side and remove the right side with the gears, then remove the spool, just make sure the new spool pinion is seated well before you place it back in the reel. To replace the pinion holder is a little trickier - you will have to dis-assemble the complete right side of the reel to get at it. There aren't any springs that will pop out at you, just make sure when dis-assembling the reel to place the parts in an order that will make sense to you when you put it back together. When you are ready to put the right side back together with the spool shaft make sure the small moveable brake blocks are slid to the center of the spool - if not you will not be able to completely secure the right side assembly plus you will crush the brake blocks. There will be about a 1/16" gap between the right side assembly and the frame if it is not going together properly. I can do this in my sleep, and I may be missing a few details but if you need me to talk you through it email me at [email protected] with your phone number and I can give you a call.
