Posts: 164 | I am looking to add some bigger sized hooks on my husky jerks. I just really like these lures and really want to use them for early season muskie fishing. I was at the store today and looking at hooks and just couldn't figure out what size hooks to buy for it. Have any of you guys used the husky jerk and if so what sized hooks were the best for them. I am also curious if you just leave the middle hook out. I would obviously update the size of my split rings according to the size of the hooks. Any input would be great.

Posts: 578 | I would go one size bigger to size 2 or 1, not sure what comes on those baits. I would use VMC wide gap bronze hooks that will sharpen a little.

Posts: 578 | Just looked at rapala website and it says 3, #4 hooks. I would go with #2 hooks or #1 and skip the middle hook. Check the action after you change them and see what kind of difference you have. Also, use a straight piece of wire and no swivel to reduce weight.

Posts: 866 Location: NE Ohio | i changed mine back when i read the musky hunter art. i changed to front and back hooks only, #1 gamugatsu's and grind the middle hook hanger off. works great but man it doesnt take many fish on one to tear those lures up! lol.

Posts: 859 Location: MN | Rapala runs VMC 9651's on most of their lures. Largest size is 1. Really sharp and not that expensive.

Posts: 409 Location: Almond, WI | I've tried running all #2s and it destroys the action, changes the sink rate. I'm thinking about trying some of those goofy looking extra-wide gap styles with one prong way out there--better for a musky's mouth, but not adding the total weight/bulk of upsizing hooks.

VMC sure set hooks are what your thinking of. I don't care for them myself. Other options include a single hook salmon guys do it all the time.

Posts: 164 | Sounds good guys. Thanks for the advice. I was assuming the bigger hooks would throw off the action a bit. I pulled the Husky Jerks out of my bass box a few days ago and it just looks like something that would be great for the early season musky.

Location: Grand Rapids, MI | #2 on just the front and back works with the rings that come on the lure but you really don't need to change them. I've changed hooks on some and not on others and it doesn't make any difference in hooking or landing fish. I don't fish them on a muskie rod so I'm not worried about straightening hooks. I fish them on a flippin stick and they work fine right out of the package you just have to remember that you're not pulling on a 7/0 hook.
