Subject: down riggers

Just got one and will be fishing for muskies with it.I have two questions{for starters}.First,do you need a downrigger rod or can you use a standerd muskie rod.Second,what type of release do you use,and,if trolling a bulldawg will the release be tight enough to set the hook.Thanks for any help,Bob.
