| While on Wabigoon last week, I had a fish follow a Topper Stopper, but no hit. I thought it was a 36" fish or so, but decided to give it another shot with an Undertaker anyway. The wind had just really picked up due to a Thunderstorm off to the south, so it was blowing across the bay at about 25 MPH.
As soon as the bait hit the water, up she came, and followed to the boat. My son took the trolling motor, kept the boat perpendicular, and allowed the boat to drift with the wind as I continued to twitch the Undertaker in front of the following fish.
We drifted at LEAST 100 yards, when for no apparent reason, the fish plain JUMPED on the lure, and took off back towards the area she came from. The fight was the craziest I have had in awhile, with 5 runs over 25 feet, and some pretty spectacular net avoidance.
When she finally hit the bag in my Frabill, she swam madly around in the bag until I got her grabbed, extracted the hook, got a stick on her and cut her loose, and ZOOM_ gone. I wonder how many follows one would convert if one ALWAYS had that kind of time...
The fish was only 41". I hope I get a shot at that one when she hits 55"!! |
