| A college buddy of mine drove all the way down from Fargo this weekend to do some muskie fishing. I figured we would head to Mille Lacs to give him his best shot at landing his first fish. So we took off for the North end Saturday morning. So we get up there and try to land at Wealthwood. No dice, water is too shallow. So we headed up to Malmo and finally got the boat in the water. As I was pulling the trailer out, I notice in my mirror that the trailer looks a little funny. I go look at it and see that the shackle that holds the leaf spring and axle to the trailer frame is broken right where the leaf spring attaches. Apparently the weight of the boat was enough to keep everything in place, but once the boat was off the axle was free to move and seperate from the trailer. We had to gerry rig the trailer with the boat straps to even get it out of the water. We hopped in the boat and went looking for help. We went to the nearest resort (wish I could remember the name so I could give a shout out, but it is just South of the Malmo access) and got lucky enough that they had a welder and someone staying there was an experienced welder. We got the trailer welded and got the boat back on it. On a holdiay weekend I would have been screwed without the hospitality of these folks.
This got a little long, but there is a moral. Check those trailers over before each trip, I know I will from now on. If that axle would have seperated on the way to the lake who knows where I would be today.
Be careful out there. |
