Posts: 182 Location: Rochester, New York | (I only using Spinning Rods and Reel) Recently had the opportunity to switch my Pike Rod over from a pfluger trion 30 to the IRT 200 Spinning Reel and while i havent had a chance to use it yet spooling it up the reel felt nice though after filling the back half up with mono the 20lb powerpro maxcuatro took a while I have a rod for muskie and was wondering what model irt reel you would recommend Their 300xl can hold 180yrds of 15 lb mono Their 400 dual drag can hold 200yrds of 15lb mono All of their reels are capable of 30+lbs of max drag minus their new ultra light reel which is capable of 15lbs I would be throwing 100lb maxcuatro (that i consider my muskie rod for throwing giant pike lures like the rapala super shad rap and occasionally using them when in the 1000 islands to see if there is a slim chance i get a muskie to hit)

Posts: 2041 | Why would you want to put 100 or even 80lb braid on a spinning reel? I use 65lb on my stratic 8000 to throw for 200lb saltwater fish…throwing a super shad rap freshwater with 100lb braid on a spinning reel sounds horrible for so many reasons And what is your worry about drag? 15lbs is plenty

Posts: 2041 | If you feel you need 100lb braid for muskies, I strongly suggest you get a baitcast reel - they are easy to use. throwing 3oz-4oz baits on 80lb spinning on a spinning rod that can handle that is a lot of WORK...I've done it lots for tuna, sailfish and marlin on 12000 size reels....you are not going to like 100lb braid on a 4000 size spinning reel.... I've caught at least a dozen 20-35lb muskies on spinning ..line 3/8 fireline...the great thing about a 400/4000 size spinning reel is you can throw small stuff.

I will start to switch to baitcasting once i teach my self on using one What is it like for trolling is it still a lot of work?

Posts: 2041 | Do you fish saltwater as well? Those IRT reels (never used one) but from a price point in the market they are extreme overkill for freshwater fishing spinning applications - nothing against having good stuff but man for $600 you can buy 2-3 nice bait casters ![]()

Posts: 769 | Agree 100% with IAJustin. I don't think there was ever an easier time to learn how to use a baitcasting reel then there is now. Recently, I watched a video of a Svilio 300 reel and the guy did not use his thumb or re-adjust any brakes! You probably can learn how to cast like a pro with that reel in 10 minutes. Nothing wrong with using your spinning gear, but like mentioned, it's just more work throwing larger baits. Kdawg

Kdawg I will probably learn at some point and whenever i can actually get a bait casting reel and rod also though i have reeled in fish using baitcasting reels on charters i feel i get more leverage with spinning rods and reels
