Just read a timely reminder that at least in Oneida County, you are pushing your luck by ice fishing right now. A local guy that specializes in off road and through ice recoveries told the local news that it just is not safe on a lot of lakes. He had just recovered an ice fishing shanty and ATV that two older gentlemen sank on a local lake. Bait shop in Minocqua echoed that warning. We should get some solid ice with night temps dropping but right now, better to be safe than sorry. I know that what was pretty solid ice in front of my place is now slushy.

We need 4" at least to be safe bring your sled only to carry your gear. It's no time for heavy fish houses or ATV's or Snowmobiles. Wear a life jacket under your coat and cleats on your boots.

Former student of mine said he was fishing on 3.5" of clear ice on a local pond. Is it that worth it? Insane.....
