Hi all, not new to Musky fishing but new to Planer Board's. Would really appreciate someone taking the time to explain how one fishes these things. Things like how far out for the boards, how long the lure out from the lines, rigging the weights. I bought some and realize I got a lot to learn real quick. I'm on lake St. Clair and the season is coming up fast. Thanking you in advance and taking up your time to help me out.

Pretty basic really. Let out the desired amount of line to reach the depth that you want to target. Put the board on the line and let it drift away from the boat. You should have your boat in gear and going about trolling speed. I leave the clicker on and just let the board travel out away from the boat. With a little experience you will detirmine how far away from the boat you want the board/line. If you are targeting a weed line, run the board out to the edge and put your reel in gear. With a little time you will be able to judge the distance or use a line counting reel.

Good luck, Murph

Thanks Murph, that's mostly what I been hearing. Experiment and learn. Never used boards and I still can't figure out the weights to use but I got my best one last year casting. If no luck wtih the boards I will revert back to my old standby at least in the early part of the year.

I usually don't use weights. The worst thing you can do is to run your baits under under the fish. They always feed up and will come a long way for a bait. On the Church board there is a sliding weight system. You can adjust the weight to accomadate the bait you are using. Go for it, there is a time and place for trolling.

good luck, Murph

IceT,
A couple of other things to consider here. You will want to pick a board with a very good release system if you are using "super braids". They tend to slip through or out of many of the conventional "pinch down" rubber releases. Also, your hooking percentage, and thus your boating percentage, will increase substantually if you use a board that DOES NOT pop off at the hit or during the fight. When I used to use boards that popped I hooked about 50-60% of the hits I got. When I went to a board that does not pop the rate goes to 85-90%, quite a difference! As to length out from the boat, remember that if that board does not pop, that board has to be worked (with fish on line) back to the boat - don't get them out any further then you have to to get the spread between your baits that you want. Most guys that I see run their inside set too far out from the boat and thus their second set gets WAY outside. Keep the first set in tight, they still catch plenty of fish.

Many more tips and technique - drop an e-mail if you need more.
