Posts: 8835 | Anybody have anything they've designed that works as a good lure retriever that fits in a lakewood? Yes, I know -- Frabill makes an actual lure retriever that works quite well. I'm trying to avoid having one more thing to carry that takes up space in someone else's boat, and one more thing I bought that I could have made for free.

Posts: 1753 Location: Mt. Zion, IL | I have a design that you knock the lure from above and you hang the lure retriever from a rope......interested? It would fit in the side pocket of the lakewood including 50 ft of 1/4" SOLID BRAID rope. Solid braid rope is almost the most important part of the retriever. A handy tool that you can use to keep the rope organized too is wrap it on an extension cord tamer. Simply unwind what you need, use it, and wind it back up keeping it from knotting up. The clevis I use is a 7/8" farm clevis and I use 1/8" thick links that are about an inch and a half long. To retrieve your lure: 1.) Position the boat directly above the snag 2.) Unscrew the pin on the clevis, thread the line through, and screw the pin back into the clevis hoop. 3.) Drop down to the depth of the bait while keeping the line taught, but not too tight. The idea is to bounce the retriever on top of the bait and a tight line will allow this. 4.) Jiggle up and down until either the bait swims through the clevis or the chains grab the hooks (this can sometimes take a while depending on the snag and your experience with the retriever). 5.) Pull up the entire rig with your bait and sometimes those of others. Edited by RyanJoz 9/22/2008 3:46 PM

rope, a few small pieced of chain, weld it to a piece of round piece of solid steel and then weld a metal loop on it so you can thread the rope through it... Drop the weight...shake....and pull.... Or you can alway buy one....usually the easier and better way to go.

Location: Des Moines IA | Use a D ring tied to a piece of thin nylon rope, then store 3 16 inch chains anywhere they will fit in the lakewood, I use the bottom of the big side pocket. When you get snagged, clip the chains on the D ring. Clip the D ring on the line slide it down to the bait. Wa La. No welding required.

Posts: 212 | Got one from Cabelas thats a rope with a metal hoop and two big trebles (with hook points cut) on it for 8.99, and has saved probably close to $500 in lures.

Posts: 462 Location: Antioch, IL | I made the same creation as Grudgings. Real simple and cheap. Luckily I have not had to test it out yet (I have had to climb a tree once...in freezing rain...Free advise: don't hide your face from the weather during a cast, climbing a tree while you are dressed for a polar expedition is no easy task)

Posts: 8835 | Thanks guys! Sounds like what I'm looking for. Hadn't thought about trying to get lures out of trees though. But then I'm just that good that I never misplace a cast. Right Howie? ![]()

Posts: 431 | I've got a retriever similar to the Frabill. I think the deepest I've gotten a lure off was around 12 feet. Got a 9 inch granny wedged in a stump really good. I consider a lure retriever in that style to be a necessity.

Posts: 514 | I use this a lot (Deep Reach) and I also fish from the bank in the river and it is very helpful: http://www.ezyglide.com/ You'll have to widen the hole in the plastic to accommodate large snaps / terminal tackle. I also have one like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/Muskie-Musky-Bass-Walleye-Lure-Retriever-1-5-po... But I'm thinking of getting one like that I saw which was similar to the above but instead of tentacles it had like a loop of steel cable. This also looks interesting: http://cgi.ebay.com/SurShot-50Cal-Crankbait-Fishing-Lure-Retriever-...

Posts: 95 Location: LOTW every chance I get | I have the one from toothyfishman on Ebay that goes for 12 bucks. I have only used it once, but it got the lure loose and paid for itself already. Thinking of putting 5-0 hooks on the ends of the chains to help it grab the bait.

Posts: 194 Location: Southwest PA | I also have a retriever from toothyfishman. Frank makes 3 sizes, I have the heaviest one he makes. Well worth the few dollars that he asks for them. Super guy and he actually spends a good bit of time on the water chasing muskies. Rich W Attachments ---------------- ![]()
