In a nutshell: A couple years ago MuskieFirst members sent me over 300 paperback books that I then sent on to our troops to Iraq. Now I want to send books to our troops in Afganistan. But I need your help.

The discussion: A couple years ago MuskieFirst members sent me over 300 paperbacks that I then sent to our troops in Iraq. Let's do it again, but this time I'll send the books to our troops in Afganistan. This has nothing to do with being for or against the war. This effort is totally focused on simply supporting our men and women who are there. It's my impression that our Afgan troops are much more isolated than the troops ever were in Iraq. And we'll be sending more troops to Afgan while we draw down and out our numbers in Iraq. ANYTHING we can send to support our folks is worthwhile and paperback books can be passed around from soldier to soldier to soldier. Once again, liberal as I am, I will not edit the books you send to me, i.e., I'll even forward those "Rush In Right" bull$hit books. What you send me I'll send on to the troops no matter what.

The summary: Mail your PAPERBACK books to me and I'll forward them to the troops. Let's use November 1 as the deadline so I can get them to the troops by Christmas.

I can't do this right without a terrific response from you guys and gals. Thank you ever so much for helping me help them.

Rick, I do not have a lot of books but I do send over lures to guys once in a while. Let me know if you want me to shoot you a few lures to send over. I know the guys who have gotten them from me really enjoy hanging them above their beds and showing off to other guys. Let me know. [email protected]
James
PS-I will also include some of the musky magazines and other books that I do have.

FYI, I believe General Order 1 is in effect in Afganistan, meaning no material than can be considered pornographic and no alcohol (not that anyone would mail these items). Ranger, will you take magazines in good shape (Muskie Hunter, Muskies Inc, In-Fisherman, etc...).

As most of you know my Son just returned from Afghanistan, He said the Books & magazines were a big hit with the Guys & Gals as many times they were without any form of entertainment during the off hours.
When sending books & mags don't forget about the ladies serving as well I'm sure some of them enjoy Musky Hunter, Field & Stream ETC, but Vanity Fair, Cosmo, People Etc. would be enjoyed also.

Just a thought......when you visit your doctor/dentist/etc you see all kinds of magazines laying around. What I'm going to do is print a copy of Ranger's post and show it to the receptionist and ask permission to take a few of the older magazines home with me. I'll then mail them to Ranger.

Ranger - do you have a deadline to receive the books/magazines?

Totally underwhelming response. Still, I'll take what I can get.

********************************************************

Update - At the time I posted the note immediatly above, my computer showed that I had zero responses, thus the "underwhelming" comment. Now I see people were/are in fact participating and I have no idea why I couldn't see those posts. But I see them now and so THANKS folks for helping.

In regard to a couple questions:

Last book drive I mailed the books with my dime ($!Ouch!) but this time I'm being guided by a local family with a son in Iraq. They'll help me keep my shipping costs to a minimum because the military has set up some agreement with the postal service regarding citizen support of the troops.

I don't know anything about military censorship, but the last book drive resulted in not a single person sending me anything more pornographic than 3 "Rush is Right" books. And I sent those on because I won't use my personal opinions to edit what I forward to the troops.

Yes, magazines are welcome. And if you send baits I'll forward them, too, but reading material is the main item I want to collect and send over.

Deadline for you to send me your materials is roughly November 1. My plan is to have the books shipped by November 10. I'm hoping that the troops get the books by Christmas.

Let's see.....did I miss anything?

Thank you again for helping me help our country's sons and daughters; they're heros, every single one of them.

This is a great idea and don't take this the wrong way but I believe the St Vincent DePaul sells there used paperbacks for $.10 a piece. For the price of shipping a couple books you could go there an buy a whole bunch of books to send to the troops. Just a thought.
