When I was a kid back in the 60s, an old timer in Northern WI told me how poachers did a version of that for musky. They would hang a sucker on a big treble and attach to a dead branch. A dead branch doesn't attract attention like a man made bottle or jug.
They would come back on the lake at dusk to see what they had.

There's some lore out there of a famous bunch of Muskies catch in the Hayward Wis. in the 50's were really caught jug fishing not on the lure that was promoted. I've hear that a couple of different places.

Oh forgot what great story of a great fish good job young lady. Catfish are as tough as they come. (what else can you leave out of the water that long and release it and it lives no problem)
