For those familiar with Mustang hydrostatic vests is this the one recommended?

Yes that has to be the one. Mine is model MD5183 and when I search that number on the website the Elite 28 comes up. Mine must be an earlier model because it just says Elite Inflatable PFD.

In today's paper, sobering statistic on boating deaths in WI last year. Crashes and deaths were both up. Of the deaths, 27 of the 28 who died were not wearing a PFD.

The other stat that stood out was that of the crashes, over 50% involved alcohol use.

I've been out 3 times this spring (twice panfishing, once bass fishing) and I would say that 95% of the people I see in boats do not have a PFD on. The water has been 60 degrees or less every time too, so its still quite cold.

Until they make it mandatory that you have to wear one, the majority of people just aren't going to do it. I am now actually wondering if most people are using a required kill switch on their motors.

This is the one I wear. It is not as thin as the bps, but I prefer that it has 38 lbs buoyancy compared to 24 like the other brands. It has been 5 years or so since comparing specs, but that is what I remember.

I have, and wear, a Cabelas inflatable. I agree the neck area is stiff and can rub ya raw. I used some moleskin to stick to the vest and it works well.

I also have a BPS foam vest as a backup if it’s raining. Keep in mind some states don’t recognize an inflatable as one of your mandatory lifevests if you’re stopped for a safety check if you’re not wearing it. Came up during my only safety check in 2022. Check your local regs.

I know in WI, the inflatable does not count as a throwable but I think it would count as a life jacket for in the boat. (Because of some issues with skin cancer and lectures from a dermatologist, I always wear a buff now when fishing so the neck chafing is a thing of the past)
