Flag Posted 7/1/2012 12:09 PM (#568538) Subject: NW Angle Lake of the Woods Muskie Report Posts: 10 Muskie fishing on the NW angle has picked up with boats seeing 15-20 fish each time out. Fish are moving on every piece of cover or structure you can think of with most of the action occurring from 2-3pm and 7pm on. Reeds, cabbage, sand, and rocks are all housing fish with the bigger fish coming off reed/rock transition areas. Smaller baits such as Mepps bucktails and crankbaits like the 6" Jake are moving the most fish. Here is a picture of one of the larger muskies caught by Brian Malack of Illinois on his weekly Muskie trip. Brian will be back up with us in two weeks. I will post some more photos soon. Anyone looking for up to date LOTW reports feel free to ask! Lots of fish are moving on long shorelines with rocks and with the full moon are moving like crazy. This one was caught on a Super Shad Rap last night around sunset. Overall had a pretty decent trip with a fat 47, 43, 40.5 and 4 fish in the upper 30's. Saw plenty of fish especially early in the week on rocks and rock/weed combos. Moved most of the fish on small crankbaits during the day and topwater from sunset until dark. Most of the fish we contacted completely ignored bucktails of any flavor. We lost/missed more fish than usual which kept this from being one of our best trips ever. Saw a couple of VERY big fish including a 50+ fish that my brother lost at the net. The hooks caught in the top of the net bag leaving the back half of the fish out of the net. The fish managed to twist and flop out as my brother dropped his rod and was diving to help. I had the beast pinned to the side of the boat for a second but couldn't get a grip on her jaw...ended up with my thumb in the corner of her mouth and some nasty cuts before she took off. A real heart-breaker to lose but even more motivation for next year. That 47 incher is a beauty! Your reports are matching up with others as far as the bucktail bite is concerned. Big Game's and even Rapala Super Shad Raps have been a good choice for crankbaits. The topwater bite should be improving! The muskies on Lake of the Woods are moving all over the place right now. Who knows if the double 10 bite has kicked into high gear, but crankbaits and jerkbaits are still working very well for those taking advantage. With the recent rains, water temps have come down once again keeping them at a safe level. Here are a few photos of some guys that put a high number of Muskies in the boat in a weeks time. Just wanted to update you guys with a current water temperature for the Northwest Angle. The main lake is pretty steady around 77 degrees, however, smaller coves are averaging in the low 80's. Be careful out there for a safe release on all Muskie!

Muskie fishing has been fair at best with some exceptionally large fish being caught. spinnerbaits and Big Game twitch baits have produced some nice fish lately. Long shorelines with rocks and weeds here and there have been better than bays and rock reefs. Hopefully we get some more rain to keep the water temps from reaching 80 degrees in August. The water clarity is good. It's about 3ft and even better the farther north you go. The water may be warm, but it does not look that way in most areas of the lake. The only thing making the water murky in some parts is the wind.

Had a pretty solid week last week for the most part but the one thing I would change if I could go back was throw more Crankbaits....they seem to be getting eaten a lot this year by fish who won't commit or move at all on blades

How long does the average bloom period last? In the few trips I have been on LOTW, at various times, the bloom has never been an issue. There is obviously enough water to work around the bloom, but just curious.

We had a big storm roll in with a bit of a cold front a couple days ago. It made the water murky (1-2ft visibility), however, it brought water temperatures down to 74 degrees. Fish seem to be everywhere right now. Shallow, deep, rocks, weeds, reefs, and long shorelines. To narrow it down a bit, windy areas have been better compared to calm, out of the wind areas with long, rocky shorelines showing fish with consistency. Wind direction is changing every day. A good spot can be a good spot one day, bad the next, and a bad spot can turn into a good spot the following day. South winds seem to be better than the north winds. Double 10's are the ticket for most as it is one of the more popular lures thrown next to a small bucktail, but guys have been having good success on twitch baits and jerk baits. Here are a few good fish caught recently. The first fish (46") was caught on a spinnerbait, the second fish (low 40"s) was caught on a Danny Bait (jerkbait with a small blade on the back), and the third fish (53") on a Suick. Fishing was solid, saw LOTS of really big fish but only had a few actually bite. Saw most fish off of the windy side of reefs/islands/points. Also caught a couple in the weed beds. Water temp ranged from 74-76 degrees. Crankbaits and jerkbaits seemed to get the most attention.

Water clarity is as much as 6 feet in the Northwest Angle. About 2 foot average, but clearer the further north you go. A lot of upper 40 inch fish have been caught lately and several over 50 inches in the last month. It has been a GREAT summer for Lake of the Woods. http://www.flagislandresort.com
