I use one of those floating sticks to measure my fish. Bump boards seems to be easy to use and I'd like to build a good one.

Anybody have any pictures of their b-boards to post here? Home made or otherwise? What materials, etc. did you use?

Brandyn Shepard (MuskyLink) builds the best plastic collapsable ones I've ever seen, although I don't own one. Mine is custom to my style. I bought poplar wood with a lot of swirly knots, then I lightly stained and coated it with some thick weather proof clear coating. The Blue aluminum bump board stick is screwed on. . . You can put pictures or whatever under the clear coating, too, or wood burning to customize with a "saying" or your name, what have you.

In addition to Brandyns board, check out "muskie bumper"'s board. That's the one I have and like it a lot.

MuskyLink bump board for me...he built mine so I can hold fish w/ my right hand...and built it custom to fit where I put it in the boat...very nice....no guessing...or 60"ers on it yet.......just a porky 53"

I just bought a 72" piece of wood from Home Depot, cut it down to 60" and used the extra 12" for the sides. Stained it, attached a ruler sticker, couple coats of clear coat/water proofing and it was ready to go. Pretty easy project and pretty cheap.

I built my on during the off season and it's pretty similar to the muskylink board. The material used is a PVC sign material that you could probably find at a sign shop. I used 1/2" think PVC for mine. Regular screws work great to hold it all together and it cuts and sands down extremely easily. Have fun with it and let us know how you do.

I made the one that is on JasonVKops & Esoxonthefly's board. I designed them to go right to left. They are laminated to be completely waterproof. I can get them done for around $25 + shipping which should only be a couple bucks. And I can do any custom pic instead of the "Michigan Muskie Alliance" one like you see on Jason's.

Home Depot, or Menard's has 60" aluminum straight edges for cheap. legible from right, or left. You can use a router on your wood, or PVC so they fit right in flush.

I did what Lance suggested and bought a 72" metal ruler from Menard's. Heavy oak for the base (or whatever wood you like) with scrap pieces of whatever was laying around for the bump part, centered the ruler on the board and screwed it down, took some thin pieces of balsa and laid them around the ruler to make it flush, hammered in some wood nails for the balsa, coated the wood with a dark stain, then gave the entire thing (wood + ruler) several coats of polyurethane. Awesome winter project and the finished product turned out much better than I expected. Just make sure your boat has room for it. Ours lays down perfectly next to the passenger seat in the boat parallel with the gunwales.

The muskylink boards are like $60. I made one out of a 10ftx 6" piece of vinyl siding from home depot. then just buy a hinge, screws, and a 6ft measuring sticker and stick it on there. It only cost like $20 and it also floats.

Thanks for all the good posts about my boards and I appreciate all that have purchased one. We sold about 100 boards in the last year and I do not have the time to make them anymore (at the moment). All of my time is going to family, friends, and my career. If you have any questions about the material, dimentions, or anything, feel free to send me a PM. Out of all of the boards we have not had one return.

I'm going to work on a new design soon and we might be buying a new router table. Hopefully have it done for the shows and available through Musky Armor/LLUNGEN Lures. Most boards go for 50-60 now, so I'm going to try to get a new one out there for close to half that... around the cost of what it would be for you to make one on your own, only saving you the touble of having to do it.

Made mine out of 1x6 and 1x8 used the 1x6 for the sides, had a friend place a groove in the center for a 72" ruler that I cut down to 60 and screwed to the board, cut it at 30 and hinged it on the back so when open there is no gap in the ruler. Works great it is a tad on the heavy side. I have about $30 invested. Sealed it with Thompson water sealer, no stain, too lazy for that.

I love the bump boards that muskies inc uses in the best of the best tourney, (granted only time ive seen them)
the whole "trough" thing is nice cause it kinda cradles the fish, doesnt let them slide right off the side as easy.
only downfall is they are not collapsable, theyre big n bulky, but #*^@ nice at that!
Had a judgeboat start motoring away and almost left theirs in our boat one time

have always just measured our fish in the water with the floating stick, never really cared about the extra 1/2 or so inch you get out of them, but nowadays
with all these big numbers getting thrown around, I better make sure that it is 42 before I post it

Here is my finished product. $23 for the plastic board. $3 for the solid brass hinges underneath. $3 for the fabric tape. $4 for the plastic epoxy (to attach the sides along with the screws). $4 for the SS screws to attach the sides.

Thanks to everybody here for their ideas, and a special thanks to "RS" for emailing me pics.

Now I've got to catch a fish to measure!!!

P.S. - yes I know the tape is upside down but I couldn't find a tape that reads from R to L, and besides I'm a pollack and not THAT anal! LOL!

It looks like styro doesn't it??!!! Bought it at Menards. It's got the texture on one side only.

if your going to use any metal (i.e. hinges,scwers) use stainless steel. it wont rust.

Just a warning about measuring stickers.

I just built a bump board out of wood, with help, in part, to info gathered here. I went to Fleet Farm for the wood, hardware and also a 60" Fishing HotSpots sticker.

Got everything all put together, stuck the sticker on and a thought occurred to me. Just for the hulluvit, I'll get out my Stanley tape measure, just to make sure it is accurate. I read a forum over on Lake Link that said one of the shorter metal or plastic bump boards someone had was 1/8" off.

Good thing I checked. My 60" Fishing HotSpots tape measured 59.5".

I called the number on the sticker and talked to a nice gal who warned me about stretching them out, (which I assured her I didn't, and that wasn't the problem because the tape was off by increasing amounts starting at about 5") but said she's double check the ones they had with a tape measure and would send me a new one free.

The next day, I got a package in the mail. The next day. In it was a letter, a Green Bay topo map and TWO 36" rulers. #$%&^!!! I don't need two 3-foot rulers!! What the heck? Oh well, don't look a gift horse in the mouth, right? Never read the letter until the following day.

Long story short, when I read the letter.....I found out ALL of their stock is off and they're pulling them. Hence the 2 3-foot rulers and the map for free. So, check yours. That monster might be longer than you think if you have a FHS sticker.

I'm going to Hobby Lobby or something for a 60 cloth sewing tape and I'll either glue or carpet tack that baby down before I apply the epoxy.

I agree with Eric 100% on the hotspots stick on tape. everyone i have used or measured with a tape has been off. i have a buddy who was fined by the dnr of having a 14.78 inch walleye in possesion when it read 15 1/8 on the tape on the side of his boat. he even showed the officer and he witnessed it, but he said that the bottom line was trhe fish was illegal. he released it so he was only fined 80 bucks. the officer said had the fish been dead it would have cost him 300. after this happened i measured the tape that was stuck on my own boat and found it to be off by as much as a 1/4 inch. another buddy measured his and came up about the same. for walleye i now use the golden rule from bass pro and for musky nothing but the muskie bumper! both measure right on! hope to have the muskie bumper guys build me a nice walleye/bass board by spring.

I bought my tape at JoAnn Fabrics, and I checked 3X with a measuring tape to make sure it was dead on. I'm going to use a Sharpee to mark the board with .500" and 1" increments.

What else is everyone using to clearcoat their wooden bump boards?

I've heard that despite its popularity, Thompson's is terrible as far as use on your deck. Any regular old household polyurethane......I really wonder how it will stand up to water, wear and tear and constant sun, especially when you combine the three.

Have been told I should use epoxy, but all I can find is the small tubes of 2-part epoxy you buy in the packages that hang on the peg board in the glue isle, and might make 1/2 of a cup of product. Which, I guess wouldn't be the end of the world to buy a half dozen packages if that's what it took, except that everything I could find said it cured to a "translucent yellow." Which wouldn't be good for seeing your ruler underneath.

Advice?

We used polyurethane on our board and it turned out fine (both personal and project boards). Before we applied it we used Thompson's wood stain for aesthetics. When you apply the polyurethane, put lots of coats on and let each dry completely before applying the next.

Steve's idea of polyester resin is a great one, too.

Liquid nails "One part" adhesive epoxy. Dries clear and doesn't stick to your hands.

Devcon 2 part 30 minute epoxy. That is what we use to build our lures. It will yellow but after quite a long amount of time. I bought it in the 9 oz bottles, which will probably work for a whole board. Or try Envirotex lite, that comes in larger 27 ounce bottles, the same type of epoxy used to cover bar tables and stuff.
