Hello,

I'm looking for a good quality big jerkbait rod for jerkbaits like: 10" pro sucker gliders, hugheys.

I foond a g-loomis rod and a st croix avid.
Wich one is better or do you know another great jerkbait rod? please let me know thanks

I'm not sure that rod exists. I guess it comes down to what you feel comfortable using. The brands you mentioned both make excellant jerkbait rods. I use both the 6'9" extra heavy,PM69XHF and the 7'6" heavy,PM76HF, St.croix premiers. They get the job done for me. I also add the rod balancers to both rods. You can pick those up from Bass Pro Shops for about 20 bucks. Kdawg

Interesting that you should mention the rod balancers. I fished both of these rods for a couple of years without them. When I was restringing in anticipation of next week, I was holding them and thought I could do something to help them. I cut a couple of sections of 1" diameter stainless steel rod about 1" long for the St Croix and 1 1/2" long for the Loomis and electrical taped them to the butts. It's worked for me in the past on some other rods and is free.

I have seen one rod that culd/can handel that, my friend has a custom built rod on a GL2 blank it's seriousli freaky my broomstick eaven looses to it. He pulled a 2/0 owner staight whit the rod and lifted a 16pound fish into the boat whit it.

Contact Lonnie at Thorne Brothers. He will make you a Great Large bait rod! I had him make me an 8ft rod based on the St Croix Premier 7'6 XH. He balanced it out perfectly and will handle anything you could throw!

The rods that I helped co- design are incredible for throwing large jerkbaits. A broom handle action is not what you want in any fishing rod, especially a jerkbait rod. What you do need is a very powerful backbone and fast upper third paired with a light enough weight that it doesn't require adding those counter balancers.

As a guy who throws gliders 90% of the time I'm on the water, I've got a great feel for what a rod needs to do and these are without a doubt, the finest I've tried. If they weren't, I sure as hell wouldn't attach my name and reputation to them.

I have a 7'0" Professional Edge Rod designed by Mike Hulbert that works like a charm...the thing is a freaking broom stick...I have the larger tremor, phantom, ben-e-bait, hughes river, and a 14" snax that I throw on it and handles without a flaw...

I will second Keith at Professional Edge. I have two of his rods and they are my favorites.
May have to add jerkbait one myself!! Sounds like a winter order.

I was throwing my *' hughes rivers two weekends ago with my 9'3" okuma without issues. i would not consider using anything shorter than my 8' heavy avid. I would not want to be caught boatside with anything less.

The only exception would be small gliders like a small glidin rap or sub walk. In those cases I use a 7'6" flippin stick. I wish it was longer but it is what I have and I don't use it much.

I use black river's jerkbait rod. It handles anything I throw with ease, including hang 10 mantas and the larger size of amma bammas glider. Customer service is awesome and they have a great warrenty. All that for around 100 bucks. I love them!

I use both, a 6'9" Heavy Power Premier and a 7'6" Extra Heavy split grip LT. The shorter rod works well when we fish from the tin boat and I mainly use the LT from the 17' boat on bigger water. I do like the longer split grip LT preferably over the solid grip on my shorter Premier jerk bait rod but I don't typically throw BIG gliders so I can't help you there with how it will handle them.

I pretty much throw everything on a 9' rod, eitherH, XH or XXH depending on the bait. I haven't used my 8' rods since June....

I carried 3 legends with me all summer. A big dawg, slingblade, and the jerk. I use the 7'6 jerk with a curado for creepers, WTD, and jerk baits because I own a bass boat that sits low in the water. Any bait that my rod tip is twitched downward I use this rod. I hit the water too often with longer rods. If I was fishing out of a 620 that would be a different story. I could easily clear a longer rod.

P.s. The combo is as light as a bass rig and can be cast effortless all day.

My best results using a bait like a weighted Viper, or one of my Playmakers, come when working them very fast and agressive. I hit em hard with quick downward snaps. The baits are all over the place, with the head of the baits often popping the top. I have learned to use a slighty longer rod 7'-7" Loomis for these baits, but I cannot duplicate to the side-the same action that I can with a short 6', or 6'-3" St.Croix these are my preference. Yes some fish come off, but I feel many of those fish would not have even made an effort to eat otherwise. Too many times it's when I really get crazy with it , that's when the fish comes unglued. I also prefer the short rod working with downward snaps for walk the dog style topwaters. Better action on the bait. Wish I could achieve the same action with the longer stick to the side, but so far it's not working the same. Perhaps it doesn't need to be the same? I like the way the bait reponds snapping down with a 6'er.

I agree with bassinbob84, If you keep slapping the water you have to shorten the rod. The higher your boat sits off the water, or less Inward jerking motion you use should determine the length of rod to use. If your boat is a foot off the water and your using a 9 foot rod sure it will do a great 8, but jerkin it will be beaten up the water.....Also a thing to keep in mind is, What if your not on your boat you have jumped on your buddies boat. Now what was nice for yours may be too long for theirs.. I think 6'6"to 7'6"would be my choice. But what do I know I just break Rods...........Mike

I still disagree, just becuase tour in a bassboat or your not tall does not mean you can't work a long rod. I work mine across my body and not in an up and down motion. Better leverage this way too. If i want with some baits, I bury the rod in the water and work the bait with the rod submerged to keep the bait deeper.

i would agree 100% with those that use longer rods and work the rod to the side rather than up and down....you flat out get a better/quicker hookset working baits to the side than up/down....I use an 8' All Star Western Inshore but would have no problem with an 8'6" or 9'

7'6" XH Shimano Compre. It's not the best one on the market, but it gets the job done for $120. I've had it for two years and I absolutely love it. With that said, I would much rather have a St. Croix or a Thorne Bros. custom rod.

I was looking on Cabela's website and I saw Quantum has a musky rod on the market for $70, that's currently on sale for $50. I have never seen the rod in person, and there aren't any reviews on it, so I don't want to brag it up. At $50 it seems like it would work. It's probably a better beginners rod than anything else, but I thought I would put the word out there for everyone.

Everyone has there own preferences I've had the broomsticks will never go back to that ,but being 5'7 over 8' just slaps the water. 7'6 is what I use now still hit the water on occasion, but I can work a bait down and to the side. No slight on the earlier post but working a jerk or glider to the side gives me the same retrieve and drags to my right. I like to be able to work to the the right, left and especially drive it deep straight down into pockets usually followed by a dead rise.

I picked up one of the 7' 6" Quantum Alliance Muskie Rods from Cabelas last year. Different model number than the one listed now, but the same specs, 20-50, 2-6. Although I think mine says Heavy, but it really feels more like a medium/MH. It was in the Club Members section for $25, down from $70, so I thought I'd give it a shot.

I've only had the chance to throw it a few times last summer, but I'm happy with it. The rod does have some flex so I don't like it as much for jerk baits or anything I need to give some tugs, twitches or pulls. It will handle them, I just prefer some of my other rods better so I mainly use this one for bucktails. No catches yet so I can't say how the rod handles a musky on the line. If they go back to the Club Member section for $25-$35 again I'll pick another one up for sure.
