I cannot find fogging spray and heard that WD40 will do the same thing. Is this true?

WD40 is harmful to waterlife and definately not good.

If you live in Des Plaines, I am sure there are a number of Boat USA (on Rand Road in Palatine, just West of Arlington Heights Rd) and the such around you. Take it from a guy cursed with bad motor luck, just get real fogging spray. Saving 20 minutes today could cost you a couple hundred $$ or more down the road.

Guest: Fogging your motor any time it will be in extended storage is a good idea no matter what the temp is

usually can find it at a fleet farm. never tried wd40,suppose it can't hurt since it repels water and won't let varnish deposit.

Jiimfish as chico states wd-40 is probably not your best option however when I went through Mercury Outboard school we used sea-foam in the gas tank and their engine storage foamer. Also the water pump impeller should be R&R'd every 2-3 years best to do in the spring. I've seen them last longer but why not spend around 30.00 for insurance

I have a Merc 9.9 that I bought new back in 1989, I still don't have quite 100 hours on it yet and it still has the original factory paint and points and plugs in it. When I am trailering the boat I disconnect the fuel line and run the motor till the carb runs out. I have fogged the motor with a little WD 40 in both piston chambers every year and have had no trouble. Still starts within two cranks. We do the same with our rescue boat at the Fire Station.
Older Ford cars were notorious for condensation in the distributor and used to lift the cap and spray WD-40 inside as it displaces water and is non- conductive.
I found good info here too as I didn't know they had a fogging spray for the outboards.
