Lynn Posted 6/10/2004 7:54 AM (#109212) Subject: Catching Bass on Musky Lures? Is it possible to catch bass on musky lures? I read that fish can consume half of their size, so wouldn't a big bass be able to strike a 6" crank or a small bucktail? My own experience is that most bass swim away from my lures although I have had a few follows on a Jr. Musky bucktail.

I popped a 5 lb largemouth prefishing a WMT event this year, and a 3 lber prefishing another event. Both of those fish hit Undertakers. Pretty big bass baits. They also looooove bucktails in the summer.

I've caught ten or so bass over 5lbs in my life, and only two have come while bass fishing. The rest were on muskie lures. I catch bigger overall bass while muskie fishing than I do bass fishing.

Posts: 2691 Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin Last Sunday I had 4 boys in my boat fishing a kids tourny, the kids wanted to win first place(biggest fish) so we worked 6-inch Slammers and Baby Shallow Raiders. We caught and released 15 bass that were over 14-inches. Most of the bass were in the 16 to 17-inch range. A pike was the biggest fish at 30 1/2-inches. I wanted the boys to score plenty of fish so we worked the smaller sized muskie baits. I have boated 6 bass over 20-inches this year on muskie baits.

It came flying out of the water (cleared the surface by 2'), and made a large splash....totally missing my lure. My brother Tom saw it and there was silence for a few moments.....we both knew it was a bass, but it was WAY to be big to really be a bass. But it obviously was. It was a freak of a large mouth. How big?? State Record size possibly....seriously. I say around 10-12 pounds. 28-30" long. No crap. The funny thing is, the very next cast, I hooked a 32-34" musky....same exactly spot. I let it shake off. Funny that a bass and a musky were living in the same hole.....the jumping bass perhaps drew the musky up and got her interested. Who knows. But missing that bass really sucked!!! I hate bass, but that would have been one to catch.

When Steve and i saw the bass come out of the water, i wanted to say that's the biggest bass, but i didnt want him to think i was crazy when i said he just missed a 10 pound large mouth. Biggest bass i have even seen in IN. I catch plently 8" bass on 9" baits. i caught a bass last weekend on jack pot and i didnt even twitch it one yet. cast it, let it sit there and adjusted my reel. as the bait just laid there, a bass ate it. tc

Also, I caught a great big walleye on Big Lake, with Duck during the 2002 Cass Lake trip, using a Musky Treat. It was almost 29" and probably 8 pounds. During the Cave Run spring outings, where larger bass baits are used, we were catching bass and catfish. Posts: 1120 Location: West Chester, OH Just one of the little perks for throwing big hardware: My 3 best bass last year came on bucktails & a musky spinnerbait. We guessed the spinnerbait fish to weigh 6#. Partner then pulled a 34" musky from nearly the same spot. Conversely, I also caught a 10" SM on a Tallywacker. "A" for attitude!

Call SWorrall and get a few of their Violent Strike Spinner Baits... The larger ones with the grub tail trailer... I can't catch a musky on one to save me fanny...:) but in the last two seasons I've had 3 smallmouth over 20" and several in the 18"-20" range...

Generally you will catch nice sized bass, but like an earlier post said every once in awhile you will get a small one with alot of attitude. I caught one on a big Suick last summer bringing it over a milfoil edge. It crushed the Suick and put up a good battle on 50 lb Tuf Line. But remember the converse is true that you can catch good muskies on bass baits. Tom

Mine have been caught on an ernie and a rizzo whizz copy, while my dads have been caught on a bagley top gun and bagley monster had. My dad did better than me his smallie was 6.75 and his largemouth was 7lbs.

While fishing muskie with an eight inch Hawg Wobbler over shallow rocks, I hooked a nice smallmouth. There was a storm approaching and I was in "last cast mode"as lightning could be seen a few miles west. As soon as the bait hit the water, the surface exploded and the fight was on. It was the biggest one I've ever caught - 18.5 inches. Every year while fishing for muskies, I also catch a few big largemouth bass - 18 inches plus. Funny thing is, I caught my biggest tiger muskie (39") and one of my biggest muskies on a weighted five inch floating rapala speed trolling for walleye! Bigger bait, bigger bass? How big will the fish be this year that takes my new custom 17 inch topwater?!

Posts: 1335 Location: Chicago, Beverly I have caught Largemouth on Musky Spinnerbaits, Jointed Grandma's and Smitty Flaptails.. a few have been nice bass(4-5lbs), most have been about the size of the baits they hit or just slightly larger(1.5lbs or less).. I have many follow baits to the boat but not hit.. Wish you could have caught that monster Steve... sounds like a heck of a fish.. I do know there are some monster bass that almost seem like they shouldn't be in those lakes.. I know of 2 Largemouth over 9 lbs that the DNR brought up about a 100 yards apart on Webster while doing their netting survey years back... Both were released successfully after being weighed and measured... I also know of a 27" Bass caught on Kuhn, sadly that fish was on its last legs when it hit the guys bait and only weighed 4-5lbs which for a bass that big is pretty light..
