| I have tried the saltist 20 and like it for the big rubber and large blades..Burns em good. Only thing I am not satisfied with the casting distance. If any users of both the saltist and 700 can give me feedback on the casting distance that would be helpful. Wondering if the 700 will out cast the saltist for distance (given the same rod, line, lure, and the cast control knob set for the same tension) Using a croix big dawg, suffix 832 80lb. I hear that the 700 is a smoother cast (does that mean distance?) and I know that the saltist is not meant for continous casting but is mainly a deep jigging reel.
Looking for another muskie reel. Toro winch if fine. I use it extensively, especially at night. Good for slowrolling big blades and topwaters. Looking to supplement it with a larger reel for large rubber, mag dawgs, jimmys, and to burn double-10s when needed. I like the saltist for that (35" pickup per crank) not any effort in cranking them either. It is really easy to just keep them just under water to almost act as a topwater. Like I say the only drawback is the casting distance on the saltist. I am thinking the 700 will will outcast the saltist due to better and more bearings and besides it was designed for casting. Am I wrong for thinking that? It has 31" of pickup vs the saltist 35" (does not seem like much difference) Will the 700 burn the blades as a saltist? Comments welcome |

Location: Ft. Wayne Indiana | Do yourself a favor and get a 400 LJV, it will out cast, out perform, out crank, out burn, and out last any other reel you are looking at. I use mine for burning 10' and 13's and would rather use that over any other reel for burning, including my Trinidad. No better reel on the market for casting and burning, ripping, jerking, etc... |

| I was looking at that reel also. Sure it is lighter than the 700te which is ideal. I also want to rip, jerk, cast mag dawgs, jimmys, and pounders when needed. Will that 400ljv be up to task for that.
The only other issue is "burning" which can be interpreted different ways by different people. The saltist I was using satisfies me for burning. You still can real slower and on the other hand speed it up where the double-10s are almost ready to fly out of the water. I at times want that option where the double-10s just stay under water as if almost a topwater. Seems that 700 will do a better job at 31" per crank vs the 400 at 25" per crank. The toro winch has 22" per crank with a lower gear ratio. Does not seem to be much difference between the 400 and toro winch. Am I wrong for assumning that? |

Location: Ft. Wayne Indiana | The LJV is all I use for ripping and popping pounders, mag dawgs, medussa's, etc...
Also, they are AMAZING for burning bucktails due to the LONG handle...and we actually tested it against a 16N Trinidad....I could burn a bucktail with alot less effort and less fatigue with the LJV.
Best reel for any and ALL applications, hands down. |

Location: Stones throw away...finally!! | Mike, have you ever had any issues with the handle stripping off while ripping dawgs? My ljv handle stripped the handle stud the first day I used it for dawgs. I love the reel and agree with you on all other points, but I won't use it for ripping big rubber any longer. There was evidently too much side torque...maybe just the way I was using it. I am a lot more cautious with side torque I put on any reel now. |

| I have not used the 400 LJV but have used 400TE's... the specs still list the LVJ at 25" per crank, is this wrong? I don't know how you could burn tails efficiently if that is the case? To answer the original post - I have used both the saltist and 700te (sold the saltist after two weeks) the 700te is 5x the reel for double the money- IMO |

Since you have used both the saltist 20? and the 700te do you find any difference in casting distance between both reels if everything is the same (same rod, same line, same double 10, and same tension adjustment). |

| well I don't know about cast distance you can bomb both... but you will get 10x more backlashes with the saltist!!! |

Wayne Indiana | I just put about 4 drops of the red colored thread locker on the inside of the nut and screw on, let dry...never had an issues. and IAJustin, trust me, this is the most impressive, effective, efficient and best reel I have ever used for burning blades of any size. I know on paper it isn't so, but trust me...fill the spool up to it capiacity and let the BURNIN' begin...you will be amazed at how much less effort goes into burning with this reel. Like I said before, I have used EVERY reel out there, I have tried them all and this 400 LJV is by far the greatest musky reel I have ever used, for any and all applications. |

| I've owned both reels, by far the 700te is hands down the better reel. It's smoother in every aspect,and cranks in the heavy stuff easier than any reel i've tried. The Saltist is a back lash king, the problem is the hole in the line guide isn't as tall as the spool, so when your fully spooled it puts the line at a downward angle going through the line guide causing back lashes. Take some line off and you can minimize the problem but, then you just lost your line pickup.
One more thing, if you fish late fall the flip lever is hands down better than the push button. Fished with a few guys last fall that had problems with there button not popping back up due to ice and freezing conditions with 400te's. The 700te never missed a beat.
About the 400ljv's iv'e talked to numerous guides and reel repair techs. They all told me to save the xtra money and just get a 400te and put a power handle on it. They told me the extra bearings are in the handle and the gearing and the line pickup are exactly the same as the 400te. They both pick up 25'' of line no matter what handle is on it. My 700te will pull any size blades easier than any 400te or ljv, just cause its got a lower gear ratio and a longer power handle. |

Location: Latitude 41.3016 Longitude 88.6160 | mskyhntr is right on, the Saltist is a very hard reel to cast, the 700TE has a 6pin spool brakes for casting. The LJV does have a stronger frame over the TE but thats it and I like the Trinidad power handle over the LJV unbalance handle. |

| I want to thank everyone for the comments. That is the best way to shop, getting comments from users. I decided to get the 700te. Just got it from Thorne Bros for $363. (10% discount). I was leaning toward the 700 anyway. Figure it cost more but well worth it. Plan on getting a lot of use from it. It is going on the croix "big dawg" |

Have fun getting it off again. Red is (usually depending on the mfg) the permanent grade and can usually only be removed with a blowtorch. |

Location: syracuse indiana | treats is right , i would NEVER use red on a reel, how is he going to have the reel cleaned with the red locktite on there. so much for cleaning and greasing inside of that gear case now... use the blue it will keep it in place just as good as red but can be removed if it need to be...bill |

Location: Ft. Wayne Indiana | I have used the red lock tight on all 3 of my LJV's...and they all have been serviced AFTER putting the thread locker on there. Pretty simple and not a problem. Love the internet...and I will ALWAYS put red thread locker on my LJV's...but commenting on a reel that you have no experience with is why the internet is awsome.
