This and the night deer hunting are direct retaliation to the wolf hunt. The wolf is their sacred animal. They wanted all of the wolf tags, but the dnr said no and only gave them 75 I believe, which they did not use. If there had been no wolf hunt this would not be happening. It's bs, wolves need to be controlled too. But there beliefs say they shouldn't be killed. They are just trying to stir the pot again and cause a fight.

Well at least they are not trolling!

Once all of the hullabaloo over it, is seen, perhaps they will.

Wow! It don't make a dang bit of difference if they had all the money in the world! They would blow it and spear every possible walleye and musky regardless. We are a much bigger group and without our money it will make an effect. Wait until the daily bag limits are dropped to 0 or 1 and watch the tourism drop! Action will have to be taken. The state will not stand fort this. We have the most aggressive and-dramatic governor in the US.

Much to do about nothing. These lakes have been getting speared at the maximum levels allowed by law for close to 30 years and the fishing is as good or better today than it's even been. Any of you whiners recall the hook and line musky guys assault on the N Twin 30 lb + musky population in the 80's and early 90's. Now that was something to actually cry about. Have any of you actually fished North Twin lately? Removing a few dozen or more muskies would probably do that place more good than harm.

I completely agree that winter spearing totals should be counted against the Tribal quotas, but it's insignificant in the grand scheme just as this little tournament is. Anglers do not make up a significant portion of any casino's patrons for a boycott to even be noticed.

For those who have never taken the time to research this, during open water spearing the Tribes can only take a certain number of muskies & walleyes out of any lake, and do have size limits on what they can take. There are also size limits for winter spearing, but no bag limits and those harvest numbers are not counted against the Tribal Quotas. If they take their limit of muskies allowed by Biologists during open water spearing season it should make every musky angler happy as the net result is total C&R on those lakes, which I can assure you would result in far, far fewer muskies being removed than have been taken by the combined efforts of spearers and hook and line anglers in the past.

The Tribes stock about 30 million walleyes back into Wisconsin waters every year and harvest about 30,000 by spearing. The statewide musky spearing harvest is usually 250 - 300, a drop in the bucket compared to hook and line harvest of both species.

I for one hope they follow through with their threat to spear their Tribal Quota on every lake in the Ceded Territory. That means total C&R and far more muskies and walleyes available for me to catch than in previous years when hook and line anglers were also allowed to harvest. If that continues long term it will affect tourism numbers to some extent but will also be hugely beneficial for musky and walleye populations in the Ceded Territory. Compare for yourself:

Spearing totals can be seen here: http://www.glifwc.org/Reports/reports.php

Hook and line harvest totals (via creel surveys) can be seen here: http://infotrek.er.usgs.gov/doc/wdnr_biology/treaty/StateMapHotspot...

They are expressing with their rights their displeasure on our use of the resources. That is their voice and people will still go the casinos, people like to gamble. BR

We get preached to that we're all equals, but it sure as hell doesn't feel like it to me. They know exactly what they are doing with this, and it's working....peeing off all the guys that preach conservation, and sustainment.

1) 'Wow! It don't make a dang bit of difference if they had all the money in the world! They would blow it and spear every possible walleye and musky regardless.'

2) 'We get preached to that we're all equals, but it sure as hell doesn't feel like it to me.'

1) Totally inaccurate.
2) Uninformed

This subject comes up every year.

By LAW, the Tribes have the right to harvest fish and game in the Ceded Territory; you do not. You have the privilege. If you don't know what Ceded Territory means, that's the first sign you don't know enough about this to understand the situation.

If you don't know what GLIFWC is you need to before making assumptions and comments.

If you haven't read the Treaty Law, and haven't read the Supreme Court decision, do so before you comment.

Keep this thread free of racism, please. If you want to argue politics and racism with each other, use you personal email.

Fantastic post. Too bad it will fall on deaf ears.

You do know Guest that over harvest happens all over and not just with the tribes, right? The folks LVD a few years ago? The retirees taking 200 to 300 perch a day off Bago? To pretend it is limited to tribal members is a joke.

Since some folks have shown they are not capable of keeping overt racism out of this discussion, it's frozen until a moderator is guaranteed to be online.
