Location: NW WI | So I was given this reel. I've never played with any open faces before. It seems to work just fine, just a little stiff and dry. Thinking it's gunna be my sucker reel now. My question is if I take this apart to clean and lube am I gunna be loosing a bunch of parts right away when the case comes apart? Any other tips,tricks,advice, comments would be helpful. Thank you.

| Just take your time...
Leave yourself a space where you can place the parts in the order in which they came apart. Pay careful attention to the order and direction of the drag washers and handle washers for instance. I like to take the entire reel apart and lay all the parts out, then clean and dry them in order. When it's time for reassembly, start at the end and work your way back to the beginning. If it's got teeth grease it. If not it should be oiled. Lightly...
A reel schematic is helpful. You can find them on line. Other that that, you can take pictures along the way so you can refer back to what this or that looked like before you took it apart.
One word of caution: There's a C clip that holds the handle in place. That little bastard will go flying, and you'll wind up on the floor with a flashlight looking for it. Do not take your reel apart in a carpeted room.
Another word of caution: Pay careful attention to the spool weights. (I think your reel only has two) They can be pushed in so they do not work at all (you'll hear a click when you do this)but you don't want to do that. You want them to slide easily on the tabs. BUT: If they are not pushed in lightly as opposed to all the way out, you won't be able to get the side plate back together. Attempting to force them will not only smash them, but you will bend the tabs.
There's nothing all that complicated inside a reel. Biggest thing is reassembling it the right way, and that requires keeping track of the order the parts go in and the direction they are facing. Handle washers for example: The metal washers go like this () and not like this )(. You'll see what I mean. Clean your drag washers, do not oil or grease them.
If you're going down that road anyway, I'd order yourself a new worm gear and a new pawl. Those are often neglected and fail regularly even when they aren't neglected. Parts from Abu cost next to nothing. At least they used to. It's been a couple years since I've needed to order anything from them but if I remember right you can buy a pawl/worm gear, Main drive gear, pinion gear and a set of drag washers (basically all the stuff that ever wears out) for less than $20.
Give it a good cleaning first and see what happens.

| As you take it a part you can put parts in egg carton and take pictures with your I-phone step by step. And maybe there you tube you can watch? |

Location: Sheboygan Falls, WI | Easy reels to work on. Do not oil/grease the drag washers, they should be thin black fiber washers layered with metal washers. Oil the worm gear, bearings, drive shaft post on the break plate, and the post that the cog where is on (left side cover). If the cog wheel is gray, there will be two locking tabs on top. Pop it off and consider replacing with a white one and c-clip. It MAY be a white one that is just on the post, then just clean and oil with it on. Lightly grease only the main brass gear teeth right before replacing the right side plate. Have a tooth brush, small screwdriver, needle nose pliers, regular pliers, solvent, oil, and grease handy. Be sure to clean all parts well and wipe down thoroughly. My 6500's from the early '80's are still going strong. I might have worked on one or two of these in the past. ?? ?? ?? |

I found some on eBay, ordered a dozen, and haven't lost one since..
7.62... I hope this schematic matches your reel.

Location: Mt. Zion, IL | These are literally some of the easiest reels to work on that have ever been made. Most of the logic above applies to any of the reels on the market. Get a parts breakdown and you can’t screw up putting these back together if you wanted to. |
