Hey Guys,

I usually head to Vermilion to a buddy's cabin for MN walleye opener which is now 12 days from today. Can anyone let me know how much ice is on the lake still?

I assumed opener was in jeopardy, but looking at the extended forecast it's going to be near 60 most days up until opener. With that warm weather and some wind, it make break up?

Thanks for any info the locals up there can provide.

I have my fingers crossed that it will be open but I wouldn’t be surprised if it isn’t. If it does thaw out though it’s gonna be super tough fishing. I have fished vermilion on walleye opener for the last 7 years. I remember one spring a few years ago where the water was 43 and it was a much warmer spring than this. If it thaws out it’s going to be really rough fishing if the water is lucky to be 40

As of this morning the Northwoods Cam Network camera at Pike Bay Lodge on Lake Vermilion showed no open water. But, looked dark and punky along shore. The other Lake Vermilion network cameras were not online this morning. The Pike Bay Lodge image was date stamped 7:49 AM today, so that is up to date.

Looking at the weather right now is the last time it will be bellow freezing for the rest of the year on V. From now until opener it will be high in the 60-70’s and lows around 50. With it being that warm i think it will come off in 9 days. Most of vermilion is not that deep compared to other lakes around there once you go towards ely and the border. If it is opened up I’d bet there won’t be as many people on it as last year because there’s no way the companies up there will be able to get everyone’s docks in in a couple days.

My dad just got up to his place on head o lakes and that basin at least is open. Said there is still an ice shelf that was pushed up onto shoreline and the water is super high. I’ll take high water over how low it was last year

Ice out was Tuesday afternoon... and yes, the water is pretty high... my dock has about 2" of water on most of it.

Hope everyone in MN had a good opener. I was out this weekend chasing panfish here in N. WI and was really surprised how warm the water was. Neighbor had a buddy helping him put in dock and lift, guy just had swim trunks. I offered a pair of waders but he said, "thanks but it is surprisingly warm". No emergent weeds yet but looking down, pretty sure there will by musky opener.
And the first crappie fry on the soft water season was tasty.
