Hey guys,

I'll be driving up to Newberry, MI, in the UP, from Arkansas on July 21st. I was thinking of leaving a couple days early and fishing somewhere along the way. The route takes me to Madison, up to Greenbay, Escanaba, then over to Newberry.

Are there any decent lakes to fish close to that route? I'd prefer a smaller easy to fish lake, more of a numbers lake, versus biguns. I'd fish for a day and a half most likely. I don't want to hire a guide.

I know with a couple hours or so detour, I can be in some great areas, but it's a very long drive.

Thanks

Monona or Waubesa on the Madison chain would be good if temps aren’t crazy by that point. If you really are looking for numbers there’s Wingra right there as well.

I would head east from Madison and fish the Lake Country(or stay and fish the Madison Chain). Pewaukee has good numbers and is pretty easy to fish. I would concentrate on the deeper part of the narrows ( between the deep and shallow basins). The other lakes in the area are also good but probably a bit harder with less numbers although bigger fish on average. North of there about an hour you could fish Little Green. Never fished it but believe they have good numbers. If you want a challenge go to Poygan or Green Bay and search for a trophy

Most importantly, try and plan your stay mid-week. Weekend fishing on these water can be chaotic with pleasure boaters

I had thought of fishing Madison, but don't want to be around a bigger city. I should have been more clear.

Why not keep driving north from Madison and fish northern Wi for a few days then. Probably not much further out of the way then driving through GB. I think if were me personally, I’d fish GB if you’re set on that driving route, or head north and find a north woods lake that you think of when you think Muskie fishing.

I should be clear that when I say “head north” I mean north central Wi. Way more lakes than the north east corner driving toward Escanaba. That area is mostly trout streams.

Of course I had thought of Green Bay. Realistically, it's way too big of water to just go fish without knowledge. I'll be skunked enough over the couple of weeks I'm up at Vermilion in August.

I was looking at the maps after posting last night and figured I'd try some waters around Eagle River. That only adds a couple hours to the trip. I'd be getting wherever Wednesday afternoon, fish sunset then and then Thursday.

Looking at The WI DNR musky info helps narrow down waters a bit. Now to figure out lodging and proximity to where I wanna fish.

Agreed. I think you’ll enjoy the Eagle River area more so than southern Wi or GB. Good luck!

How is Butternut east of Eagle River? I may bring my brother, and more of a numbers lake would be great for him.

Would Sue give my new pup ice cream like she did Kiara?
