Posts: 267 Location: Central Pennsylvania | What sorts of baits are you going to be throwing with said setup? different combos are better suited to different sorts of lures, obviously not gonna do well throwing double 10s on a 8.1:1 haha

Posts: 426 | I have a top and tails. IMO it's a little light for any thing more than double 8s,

Posts: 206 Location: Minneapolis, Minnesota | I would say tranx 400hg and the big nasty, and then lexa tw with the 9’3” xh maybe for bigger stuff. I will say I owned one of those okuma rods before and it was pretty solid for the money, although it seemed way overrated power wise. If I was in your position I’d sell everything besides the big nasty and get either one nice 9’ MH or XH depending on how big of lures you generally use. 9’ MH legend tourney or elite are incredibly comfortable rods. If you want to stick with st croix, LT 10ft xtra heavy is a great big bait rod. Otherwise chaos, shimano or Thorne all have good options

Posts: 120 Location: Twin Cities Metro | 8’ MH + Lexa 300 7.4: small bucktails and topwater 9’ H + Tranx 400 5.8: crank baits, maybe twitching 9’3” H + Lexa 6.3: Bucktail rod, bigger top water 8’6” XH + Lexa 8.1: jerk baits, large twitch baits 9’3” XH + Tranx 400HG 7.6: big rubber My method was to look at what each rod will be good at throwing and working (ie figure out the rod’s purpose), then choose the reel that matches that purpose. High speed where you want quick pick up of slack, slow speed where you will have the line under tension with hard-pulling baits. Alternatively, if you really like one or two of those rods (ie the way they load, cast, and figure 8) then you could pair it/them with the most versatile reels and throw almost everything with it/them. The other rods would then be specialist rods for specific things that generalist set-ups wouldn’t handle well. Up to you of course. Hope it helps.
