I'm fishing from a modified canoe or from the shore, I'd like a box or bag that is okay for the canoe as well as for shore fishing which often entails some walking. To be clear, I don't need to bring 700 baits, meaning I don't need anything huge. I currently run a couple plano boxes, I'd rather switch to hanging em vertically though. Thank yinz for the help!

A square 5gal cat litter bucket, one with those little shelf deals around the outside, just below the top. Cut notches with a Dremel tool and hang the baits on the inside, three sides for baits, use the 4th side to hang release tools (and a PVC tube for leaders) on hooks or with Velcro. Notches should be deep enough to use the lid but not so deep the outside hook tips hit the little shelf. (That little shelf will help ensure the baits don't get hung up on whatever when moving/storing the bucket. It "hides" the hook points. If necessary notch those, too.) Use the open space in the bottom of the bucket for your first aide kit, flashlight, whatever. Drill a couple holes in the bottom for drainage.

There you go. Custom tackle box for about $10.

Great idea, my other idea was a soft cooler with downspouts in it. I figure the cat litter bucket might be a slight bit cumbersome for walking with though.

Lakewood came out with a mesh bag (Money Bags?) that can carry three of the large plano trays. $25

Yea, 5 gal bucket is kinds bulky. But unlike almost any other option, you can sit on it.

I just recalled a guy I met ice fishing on Little Bay De Noc - He carried all his gear on his back in an "trapper's pack". Not a backpack but a 5 gal woven basket, open at the top, with backpack straps. Prol weighed no more than a pound or two. Very classy/handsome.

don't know if that link will work but LL Bean sells what I saw for $100. Nice.
