Location: Eastern Ontario | Whats the biggest fish you have caught from the smallest water. My nephew has been fishing 2 small unfished waters that require a canoe and portage to access he has caught numerous fish but has not seen anything much over 40 inches. I have caught big fish in small rivers but these have been connectors between larger lakes.

Posts: 20181 Location: oswego, il | My longest is 48.25 caught from a lake under 200 acres. I've netted a 49.9 from a lake under 100. A buddy of mine seen the biggest Wisconsin fish he's ever seen by far(has a 49 on the wall from the "good 'ol days") from a lake under 250 acres. They are in some of them them just not all.

Posts: 3785 | I once lived on an 80 acre lake that had a bunch of pike over 40". One stupid young local mother****er speared 5 fish between 45 and 50" in 2 days. He posted his pics at a beer store, they were up for about a day. I tracked him down, showed up at his house and found out he was just a stupid dumbass who didn't know better. He wasted the fish, too, threw them away after a couple days. I wasn't the first person to confront him, either; he was beat down, lectured by the CO, and genuinely regretful. If you want to find big fish in a little lake look for a lake with a constant stream of water on one side, a swamp on the other side and deep water between the two. Those few glacier lakes where the glacier rolled over the broken tip of the ice. Many of these lakes were stocked with trout because of the depth, all the better. Trout are lady finger sandwiches to pike. If the lake was stocked with trout, start with pink/purple colors. The little lake I live on hadn't been stocked with rainbows for 20 years but the hot bait/color was still a big Rapala Risto Rap in plum trolled 2' above the thermocline. That plum color was crazy hot, all the time.

Posts: 5 | I have been fortunate enough to fish many of the bodies of water where giants live ...(LOTW/Mille Lacs/Ottawa river) but ironically my biggest fish ever came from a Wisconsin puddle (under 250 acres) at 54.5”...funny how that happens sometimes

Posts: 390 | There is a ~50 acre lake I would fish when the bay of GB was too rough for me that has put out a number of upper 40s and even 2 50s back in the 2010s (that was weird to type). Have not heard of those sizes recently (but I also no longer live near there), but that lake was a gem for a while.

Posts: 1971 | I really prefer big water, and almost always plan trips to 20,000+ acre lakes, that being said I’ve caught dozens of 48”+ muskies on stocked lakes under 500 acres due to closer proximity than “big” water.

Location: Eastern Ontario | None of our puddle lakes are stocked so I guess were talking different animals. The only stocking in Ontario is to try and reestablish lost populations Lake Simcoe and Spanish R. are the only 2 I know of. Local lake was last stocked 1970 or 71. Deer Lake Hatchery closed in 91. Difficulty obtaining minnows and water too warm for cool cold water species. https://www.marmorahistory.ca/new-page-88 Edited by horsehunter 1/28/2021 10:48 AM

Simcoe is a lost cause in my opinion. Way too much going into that lake that shouldn't be. It can't even support a natural population of lake trout, let alone muskie.

Posts: 1971 | Any theory why the stocking on Simcoe don't seem to be working well? are the stocked numbers low? .. fishing pressure alone probably isn't it, many of stocked lakes in the states get absolutely pounded but still kick out quality fish

Location: Eastern Ontario | Looks like after ( I think 18 ) years the project was canceled after budget cuts. Fish are being seen but I don't think there is an open season. People want fish stocked they can eat. Project probably too small to be successful except maybe in the very long term. Too many anglers who have no idea what they are catching and would eat a 20 inch musky. Edited by horsehunter 1/29/2021 10:02 AM
