I Just picked up a mattlock. Just wondering where people like the pin setting on the bill of the bait the best when trolling the bait?

In general, I suspect you'll find the shallowest pin (hole furthest away from the bait) is a favorite. It runs slightly shallower and it walks more on the shallow pin. When you buy it, it comes with pin in the middle. Plenty of folks leave it as is, and they get bit plenty. No wrong way to fish mattlocks/headlocks. Personally I'd say I fish 60% of the time shallow pin, 30% middle pin, 10% deep pin. They're wood baits so they all run slightly differently. But good rule of thumb (IMO) if your mattlock is a 10" put it on shallow pin, and if your mattlock is 12" put it on middle pin.

Location: Walker, MN
As a rule of thumb:
-Early season, first hole.
-Summer, middle.
-Fall, deep pin.
The shallow and middle pin have the most wander, deep setting has much less.
