Just wondering how you experts figure 8 when using topwater lures.. do you go subsurface any or keep it on top during a follow ? What other methods Triger strikes ?

not an expert at all. i tried to do what the fish seems to like. if he like it top do it surface. just look the way he move ,to your presentation .if he open and close his mouth multiple times, far from the lure do completely the opposite. imo that kind of behavior is the worst thing that could happens, after no follow at all ........the thing you don't want to use at a figure 0 is a wtd lure. worst top water for figure 0 imo

A round or two up top then drop below. Once below, it doesn’t hurt to come back on top for a second or two then back under. That’s what I do at least.

Have converted dozens boatside on topwater, including 1 last time out :). I’ll now take a prop bait subsurface 100% of the time ..often 4-5 feet before the bait ever makes it to the boat/ first turn by burying the 9’ rod..it basically just becomes a buctail, do at least 10 full 8’s after you think the fish has left , fish spin off , reposition and hit propbait in the 8 a lot for some reason .. wtd I try to read the fish, sometimes will keep these on top especially if you can tell the fish is about to go but still catch some subsurface on wtd, even some the are just following lazy..with a little practice you can keep a wtd top water “dancing” subsurface.

Converted dozens upon dozens too and have never taken a prop bait sub surface. Lots of ways to do it.

Yep bring it sub surface for sure, up and down and don't be afraid to pop the surface some as well.

Hiya,

I'd say it depends on the bait...

Prop Baits I'll try to match to the attitude of the fish. Tight and really aggressive follower I'd most likely keep it on top. A little lower and slower, I'll take it under and mix it up like Pointer suggested.

Creepers, crawlers, walk the dog I'll keep them on top.

Hog Wobblers and Wolly Pogs i'll leave up top. Despite looking like a nice jointed bait sub surface never had one go that way on this style of bait.

Prop baits I like to take below the surface like a bucktail. Thats usually after I've tried some other trigger like speed up or little rod twitch to the side when I have a wake up.

I like to sub surface my props baits. Last two on the eight were both dunked under.

Thanks guys… The next few weeks/or month is prime time for topwater and was curious as to what others do during top water follows.... I also go subsurface on follows. Even managed to get a couple to hit a Weagle under water... Pretty Cool.

i always kind of went with fish on top stay on top, fish below go low. But don't think there is a definite right or wrong here.

This is what I do. I've had them hit both ways and when the bait pops back above the water.

I work um just like the guy who cut me outside of Nye's back in the 80's, wide, deep, and frequent.
I've had some luck dead-sticking about a boat length away work too when they're moody/hard to read and i'm fishin slow.

Ha nope, those familiar with Duluth can probably figure out why that file was saved the way it was.
