Posts: 6 | Hi everyone, I am going to Lake Waneta first week of July. We will be fishing for bass, but I would like to try my luck fishing for Muskie. Any help would be greatly appreciated, (or if anyone knows of a thread on here I can read) as far as type of rod, type of line, and what kind of rig with bait. thank you very much,

Posts: 54 Location: Madison, WI | To just get started, I’d go with an 8’ medium heavy rod and cast some bucktails/crankbaits/topwater. A good 80lb braided line like Sufix Performance, and 130lb 12” fluorocarbon leader. Something like a black Buchertail 700 and Bucher shallowraider - something along those lines. Good luck!

Location: Athens, Ohio | PLEASE bring proper release and handling tools! Long handled pliers, a deep coated net ( for 'penning' the fish, not for plopping it into the boat!), hook cutters, jaw spreaders... These seem like big, hearty fish, they are actually quite fragile and can be inadvertently harmed to the point of their death without proper handling and release processes. Be careful and please educate yourself. There are plenty of good release videos on YouTube for your information .m

Posts: 6 | Mikie, I am glad I asked, I knew they had fragile jaws, but didn't realize all that was needed to unhook the fish. thank you, I will definitely check out the videos on Youtube.

Location: Athens, Ohio | Also, they have very sharp teeth, a lot of them, and they are not afraid to use them. You'll not be BillDancing them into the boat! You may find some pretty gross videos about that on the Tube too. I've grabbed a hundred of them already, and each one is a new learning experience. Most important tip - make your goal to have fun learning and let the lucky fish find you.m
