| Howdy,
As the question states, how late in the season can a person still cast for muskies on LOTW (or on other northwest Ontario shield lakes) before it becomes a waste of time due to the need to start trolling or freezing guides?
As a person who no longer has any interest in trolling, but does have an interest in fishing as late in the season as possible, this question is one that I would love to hear first hand opinions on.

| It’s different year to year depending on weather. This year 10/15 -25th had some cold mornings where worm gears on your reel were in trouble and you needed to stop. After 10:30-11am it was usually fine to continue casting. The 4 years prior, same time frame, no reel freezing issues at all. |

| Howdy,
So using that time frame of October 15-25 are you usually casting lures or soaking suckers or both?
Also, location wise, are there any shallow movements of fish or is it all deep reefs, roc piles, points, etc?

| Casting and occasional sucker if you can find one. One line allowed per man in Canada, so you need to choose.
Location, find the bait balls if possible, or where the bait is headed to spawn. It’s definitely not the only or best option; but many musky do tend to be close by in late fall. Water temps have a lot to do with how it all stacks up. Stay opened minded, let the fish tell you where they are.
Always a few shoreline fish available no matter what’s going on in my experience.

| As has been said, it's highly variable based on local weather conditions. I've fished in a blizzard one year and then in a t-shirt the following year in Oct on LOTW.
As long as temps allow, you can do quite well casting. We've had success casting our traditional spots that are located in or at least connected to main lake basins. Usually best to be working the spot a bit deeper, but not always. Agree with the post above to be paying close attention to bait fish concentrations. |
