Me and my boat will be coming home from Superior, WI this weekend. Thinking of either driving 90 miles NW to Vermillion and fight the crows or....find somewhere along 53 on the way south.

Any recommendations for lakes like 45 minutes or less off of 53? Chance for size would be great, but since I only have a day and a half, probably also somewhere not super complicated.

Thanks!

Or do I just head east to PI or Boulder and fish where I know a little more.

it's 3 hours from my house to Duluth so not sure if that is too much of a "change" over your long-haul ... 1.5 to Asheland and 1.5 from there to the bridge.

Stay in Duluth, fish the estuary or hit Island Lake. Wouldn't recommend island unless you're familiar though.

Just yesterday there was a story on the local public radio station that lake trout and whitefish fishing have the best in years of the Apostle Islands.

It's been 15+ years since I've fished it, but back in the late '90's/early '00's one of my favorite lakes was Big Sissabagama, which is only ~15-20 minutes east off of Hwy 53 from the Hwy 70 Spooner exit. It's only 800 acres but fishes a bit larger as there is a fair amount of structure. Back in day at least, it was always a good action lake with a pretty reasonable shot at a fish >45". Not sure if it's still the same.

Amnicon, Potato Lake/ Island Chain if you want to get further south. I’d probably suggest getting on stuff you know out East though.

Big Sissi is awesome. You have LCO there too

I'd second the St Louis in Duluth.

Island lake outside of duluth. Not a numbers lake but good shot at a giant 50-55.

So many options... but the St. Louis river and bay are right there.
