I’m going to take a day trip over opening weekend and fish new waters. Not really looking for giants, but some action. I’ve tried Callahan and Tiger Cat. Any thoughts?

Spider, Lost Land and Teal are all good choices.

Not east, but north of Hayward is Day Lake in the Chequamegon National Forest. The boat launch is about 1 mile west of Clam Lake off of County Road M. Definitely one of the best action lakes IMHO, I have fished it a few times. Some days the amount of action will be more than you can imagine, other days it will be very slow. Pretty much all of the fish will run in the upper 20's to low 30 inch range, way too many muskies in there for them to grow any bigger. Also, the lake is in the middle of nowhere so the scenery is awesome with a chance to possibly see some elk as well. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the input. Sounds like it will be either Lost Land or Teal this time. I’ll try the others next.

Definitely hazards in day. Not to big of a lake though. Even moving slow, it doesn't take long to go end to end.

So a lake basically to put the trolling motor down on and just start in?

You definitely could do that. I have before.

There is an island just off the boat launch. When you take off, stay to the right of it on the campground side of the lake and you should be fine. In the past, the USFS drew the water level way down to clean it up some although that did not work as well as they thought it would. Also, hit the bogs with small bucktails and bass spinner baits. These have worked well for me when I was there.

I've never been on it, but will be camping there over memorial day... Planned on fishing area lakes so day was not high on the list, but knowing it has muskies in it, I'd give it a try..

Was out there last year. Caught a 32". The fish are still in there. There was no one around. I was the only boat on the lake, and the few times I stopped by the launch and campsite no one was around. From what I read about the lake it use to be weedy, but didn't have as many weeds as expected since they drained it.

Have you checked to make sure the campsite is still open?

I thought they had closed that campground and the one at Mineral a couple of years back.

Campground is open on Day, they closed Mineral.

I think Day sucks now, fishing wise. I'd fish Mineral or Moose or Clam or Chippewa if I was in the neighborhood and wanted to catch a little muskie or 3.

You can access Teal from Lost land, put in on Lost, and take the channel to Teal. Moose has numbers, but over 40" is a rarity...

If I remember right, there is a rock right at the end of the channel between teal and lost land, but I don't recall which end....if memory serves me correctly it was on the Teal side...

The rock is on the Teal side to my memory, and when coming from Lost Land, you want to veer left.

You also want to go slow through there the channel, not everyone does, nor do they adhere to the 10mph speed limit. Go slow between the two islands with the shallow saddle on teal. It has isolated rocks, you may make it, you may not. I watched 5 boats bite it going through there on plane one morning. it's a long way around those islands but the smart way.

I spent 4 days on Lost Land in August last year with my wife and daughter. My fishing time was limited to 2-3 hours before breakfast and a couple of hours in the evening each day. I only motored over to Teal once while we were there and only fished it for a short time. All of my action was on Lost Land. I did have a good amount of Musky action for the amount of time I fished. I didn't see anything big, but I know that people catch decent sized fish in those lakes. The muskies I boated were 32", 33" and 34". I also lost a couple that threw the hooks, had a couple of blowups on topwater that I missed and had at least two bucktail strikes that I missed. Bluegills/Perch and Sunfish were pretty easy to catch in the shallows around weeds. I didn't spend a lot of time fishing for anything except for Musky, but I did manage to catch one small LM and a small Northern. I would definitely go back there.
