| Last year had someone mention that they were getting fish on blades with hair. Are people seeing a preference? If so could this be a cold front tactic? |

| The lakes we fish we don't use tinsel very often. It's hair or marabou. |

| imo blades colors and thickness is more important than the skirt.one of my best marabou was so destroyed that there was not even a 1 quarter of marabou left and was producing like it was new |

Location: NorthCentral WI | Confidence in what you're throwing is probably the biggest difference. Personally, the vast majority of bucktail fish I have caught have been on hair. I'm sure there are others who have had an opposite experience. |

Can you explain the conditions in which the scenario would call for one or the other? Nope... I would venture to say a black bucktail hair skirt has caught more fish than all others combined. |

| There are advantages to all of them, IMO
1. Hair holds up better than Marabou, but it stays wet for a long time
2. Marabou looks more lifelike, but does not hold up well, and the color fades out of it more easily
3. Tinsel dries quickly, and the possibilities are endless in terms of color combinations
Fish don't care one way or the other from what I can tell. |

Location: Minnesota. | I've found I like hair w/a bit of tinsel or Flashabou mixed in in the appropriate amounts.
I think a boy should have a variety in what he likes best. The colors are endless, the options are endless. Pick a couple colors you like best and stay with those for a few years.
My prefs are basic and simple as long as it lots of black with chrome or copper blades. I could go crazy easily but then there's those Suicks.......:))))) |

Location: Walker, MN | It seems to me, tinsel flairs-out to the size of the vortex created by the blades. Side-by-side with hair, tinsel has a larger profile. Marabou looks half the size in the water. I agree that the blades are more important though. |

Location: Chisholm, MN | I think flash is important if you want to be flashy. Otherwise it doesn’t matter. One reason I do like marabou is that it’s easy to cast. |

| I prefer marabou, however my biggest bucktail fish was on hair... I'm a big fan of electric bunnies and big birds, a combo of marabou and flash. I like the way the marabou pulses in the water and like KB said, they cast great when they soak up water.
Last year I had the most success on Dadsons... |

| Tinsel is wild, high action, can be bright and flashy
Maribu has good action but less wild
Hair has the least action
Any can work at any time in clear or dirty water with bright skies or night time, as blade thickness and size is also very important more or less if you moving fish and not getting bites something must change I have seen tinsel unjulate and "scare a fish off" (in my mind) made a switch and pow... I normally throw tinsel and my dad like hair/ maribu, he has got two to my zero as many times as I have got 2 to his zero... let the fish tell you |

| Also flashibu/ tinsel has a reflective sheen, some hair does as well where as maribu doesn't have a reflective property under water can make it have a more distinct silhouette that may help a fish decide to try it. |

| imo for spinnerbaits hair is by far a better option,for d10 flashabou is better.tinsel is the materiel used on the glittertails,it curled and look disgusting really quick as soon as it get hot just a lil bit.really bad material .but blades is the most important thing |

Location: Madison, WI | ive gone away from any holographic flash on any of the bucktails I make. it just knots up way too much and after getting wet, drying, getting wet, drying, it just gets frizzled out. the "flat" flashabou is much stiffer, dries better and just seems like a better product. Nothing tangles and there is better movement in the water.
marabou is great to cast but a pain to tie, if you go with marabou make sure everything sits out for a looooong time as its going to rust everything up. pretty sure they made bucktails out of deer tails because tinsel didnt exist and it was readily available.
in the end, I think it doesnt matter what you use.....if it moves its food. If they were seeing fish on "blades with hair" maybe it was due more in part to the size of the lure vs. the material. Not alot of 10s/12s built with hair vs. tinsel. Most of your hair bucktails are smaller lures such as mepps, ghostails, etc. |

Ghosttails are made with all three hair, tinsel, and marabou and most seem to have the hard to find "halo" around them underwater. They also make larger tails too and you can get custom colors & nice deals on them if you stop by their booth at the upcoming Minnesota Muskie Expo. See below for a couple examples of some double 12's with a double 10 in the foreground for size comparison. The 12's are hinged and turn just like a bait fish in the figure 8.

Location: Madison, WI | I guess everything has tinsel in it now....i was incorrectly referring to older style ghost tails back when i had them, honestly haven't shopped for buck tails in 10-12 years since ive made my own....ok, replace ghosttails with...eagle tails? |

| I like marabou because I enjoy tying it and it is fun to catch fish on homemade baits. I do find maraboue easier to cast in the wind since it holds moisture better, but that problem can be solved with a heaver weight on a tinsel bait. I've caught fish on tinsel as well. I think it is mostly personal preference. |
