Has anyone else had the line get cut on a sucker hookset?

Yesterday, I noticed a big swirl behind the boat and the balloon bobber was missing. Fish didn't run as the clicker never went off. I reel down and feel the fish so I set the hook. Felt some weight but then suddenly nothing. Also the balloon bobber popped and a bunch of bubbles came floating up.

I am 99% sure that the 100lb powerpro didn't break from force as the rod never really loaded. I think it was cut. My guess is that the fish somehow had the line in its mouth or wrapped around its gill plate. It is strange because I am using a rig with 36" of heavy wire before the braid. Also weird that the balloon bobber popped-they usually never pop so I am thinking it was ripped across something sharp (mouth). I have caught lots of musky on suckers and never had something like this happen. Hoping the fish survives or I can catch it again this fall and retrieve my quick strike rig!

Yes - as far as i remember exactly how you described it. Fish only had the sucker for about 10 seconds. I had a 2 foot floro leader. Sliced the main line braid. Figued the main line was somehow in the mouth or gill plate.

Power pro is your first problem, but it certainly could have been cut.

Yup. Masterbraid is truly the only line that holds up to the strain of big baits and sucker fishing.

Check your eyelets on the rod. I have had this happen due to the defective eyelet

Your mainline may have wrapped around the wire and shredded when you set. Blame the sucker.

I use to worry about that more before switching to floro leader
