Last year when I was physically unable to make lures, I received a box of boards from a good friend that contained 16 or 18 3' long boards. Most were 3/4" thick with a few 7/8". And with the wood, a letter about the wood that I was holding. It was a shoring beam reclaimed from an 1850 silver mine that was milled into 3/4" planks for me. I was blown away but could do nothing, I was physically incapable of tackling any of the job but putting pencil marks on wood. I sent a few boards to a very good friend and he set about making those old boards into lures. He said he had more interest from collectors that fishermen, or fishermen who were afraid to loose them. (Just don't run them deep) In October a friend from MN asked if I could make him some 12" trolling lures, so I agreed and set about making a nice body style and cutting 3/16"thick lips to go along with them. During the next week I took a prototype and changed the lip angle and depth of the slot, I positioned the line tie 3 times and changed the weighting a few times. Until I finally could take the prototype and run down the 50 yard dock at South Shore Yacht Club in Milwaukee as fast or slow as I wanted with 10-15" of line hanging off of my trolling rod, and slow or fast, it wobbled just like I wanted to and I figured that a 10' or 12' depth wouldn't be unobtainable. I painted 4 colors he wanted and before I clear coated them, I made sure that everyone ran straight, and they did. His only complaint from idle to 3.75 mph was that they came up in the contour following turns, but they weren't blowing out which made me happy. I took the prototype and added a pencil sinker to the new balance point so I wouldn't overweight the belly and lose the action, and it did the job.
I was looking at about 20 -12" trolling blanks and 8-10" Shad profile trolling lures. Since painting still knocks the crap out of me, I painted 5 Cisco/Whitefish lures that actually have 8 colors in the pattern, 3 of which I designed myself (Thanks Stan). I also finished each lure with Kameleon highlights and scales and a top ridge that is all done in crushed prisms. The second 5 were made of one of my Favorite colors, Hot Copper over Chartreuse with gold and bronze highlights and a gold pearl belly and flanks to set it off. The last 5 before the cold snap were 5 classic Perch patterns but all of them are painted with flexible House of Kolor Acrylic automotive paints, and all have color shifting Kameleon Kolors. They haven't been EText'd yet, because I won't clear coat them until I'm sure that every lure runs just as it supposed to. (Thats how I get lures.)
So there's the story of the "Giants", made from giant Redwood timbers cut in the 1850's making it 500 years old or older. We called them "Giants" because they are made from a Giant Redwood. I'm planning on making more 10" Shads and then 8-7 and 6" lures using up every inch of lumber that I had except for a few hidden away for future projects.
You can fish them. You can collect them. You can do what you want, but if one more guy calls me a liar and a con, I will pull every lure from site and my daughter can find someone to sell them to collectors only. I thought for months about what I would do with these, and I figured that if the waters of muskie territory swallowed them up, then it was supposed to be.
I also have over 70 Figured Redwood blanks that look like an elaborate Brown Gold Perch pattern that God made in the wood. They are different shapes and lengths, and I'm refraining from painting the bellys white to make them useable lures because drilling weight holes that require filling is the only way to make them real lures. Once it warms and I can seal them, I'll have a pile for you to pick from before Christmas. Already putting "really pretty ones" for mantle hangers on the side and some smaller ones to add to driftwood on mounts and replicas.
So here you are. That's what is going on. Right now I have the 12" Giant Trolling baits up for sale for $50. Any added insurance and stuff is up to you. I see guys plunking down $70 dollars for big plastic lures or 12" gliders that will plum wear you out. Here's your chance to own a piece of history. How was the muskie fishing in 1850? think of what happened as that wood stayed put underground over the last 135 years, or during the 400 + years that it grew to it's amazing height.
I can hear God laughing as the miners fell that tree and pounded headers up in the mine, "Just wait until 2014/2015 when Beaver gets his hands on that wood and turns it into fishing lures!" HAHAHA!
The figured lures will all be priced different, but I hope to get pictures up next week.
Serious inquirees can message me.

Very Nice looking lures---Re-Claimed REDWOOD on the Musky Hunt...Very cool story---If I could use a 12" trolling bait I would take 1----If you make some in the 6-8" size for casting I would be interested. AND WHO CARES WHAT SOME MAY THINK !! many Anglers will be proud to use or display those lures---Let the buyers be the final JUDGE on them---I think they will all find good homes...

Hey 47, do you really think that I would paint over "figured Redwood"? This stuff looks like real tight grained wood, a little heavier than cedar. I have "FIGURED REDWOOD" which is the real pretty stuff and all I do is seal it and clear coat it. I now the difference between "FIGURED REDWOOD" and Redwood planks. Go check out my post in the Basement Baitmakers forum and you'll see the difference.
911- 6-7 & 8" models coming out later. I used every inch of board.

Wow, these are gorgeous and unique baits with a seriously cool back story! I'm with esox911...can't wait to see those 6-8" when they're ready. I know I'm gonna want one!
