I have some Bulldawgs that I'd like to paint. Can I use regular spray paint to put a scale pattern on them.... or do I need special paint?

JLo - You have two options, one is basically a solvent with pigment and needs to be used in a very well ventilated area (should probably use a rebreather too):

The other is water based but unlike the above requires a clear coat over to be permanent. http://www.ispikeit.com/Store/c-97-colure-coat2o-water-based-soft-p...

Super nice people at Spike-It and they will spend all the time you need on the phone talking about their products.

If scale pattern doesn't have to be pretty you can achieve similar with a sponge that can look pretty cool. Changing the color of tails or belly colors can be done with a paintbrush.

Thanks Will. Good options, but they seem a little complicated for what I'm looking to do. I've been using the SpikeIt Worm and Chunk paint... but the end result looks like a 4 year old painted the bait :-)

As much as I love tinkering with lures, I may need professional help with this project. Are there any resources out there that will custom paint soft plastics (Bulldawgs) upon request?

Correct, the worm chunk paint is not going to do what you need. I believe Boggs will do anything you want. Jason Cheney, before moving to Alabama did some custom painting you can probably track him down on FB.
