Posts: 1462 Location: Davenport, IA | Honestly, are they just messing aroudn when they miss a topwater or are they that stupid? Today I had one jump completely out of the water without even touching the doc. Do they really have that bad of aim?

The position of their eyes causes them to lose sight of it right before the strike. That is why a steady retrieve that doesn't swing far out to the sides is so important. Most guys make the mistake of letting their lures glide to the side instead of holding a tight side to side motion on the surface. This isn't a problem with submerged baits because the fish can strike from the same level as the bait.

Posts: 32959 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | There are many factors that cause the muskie to have problems hitting a surface bait, many of which are out of your control. The tighter the pattern of retrieve the better, but they will still miss. Some conditions the fish can't see the bait at all and are trying to hit the signature without sight, a fromula for a miss, most times. Sure is exciting, though!!

| I know that sometimes muskies flat out miss lures, but I think that is a very rare occurance. I still believe that most of the missess on topwater lures are muskies simply slashing at the lure to chase it away. Why do I believe this?? Well if you have ever spent any amount of time watching muskies in tanks when they are feeding, they almost never miss what it is they are trying to eat. I still think that if a musky really wants to eat a lure the lure is going to get eaten. God bless. John Stellflue www.oneidaesox.com | |||
