| I have seen a few people online that do custom airbrush painting of baitcasting reels. I've tried to contact a few without any luck. I'm curious if anyone here may know someone that does outstanding work. Basically I need a paint job for a calcutta 400TE. Last summer, I lost a basically brand new 400TE over the side of the boat in 10 feet of water during a night fish. We plotted a waypoint and returned the next day, however could not find it diving with fins and goggles. A year layer, on a one in a million shot, while fishing the same spot, my friend's dad hooked it with a single jig hook and brought it in. Mechanically the reel is in excellent shape, gotta love Shimano! However all the gold plating has worn off. I tried removing the remaining gold finish with cleaners and tried polishing it with rubbing compound, no luck. Still appears beat up. Was debating on using a can of automotive paint on it with a clear coat finish, but I know it wouldn't be the best. Since the reel is in such amazing shape mechanically, I'd like to get her looking great again with a custom detailed paint job. Please let me know if you do airbrushing or know of someone who does. Greatly appreciated!

Location: NE PA | I would keep it as is. That makes for a great story! But, if that doesn't do it for you, it can always be powder coated. Lots of places will do it for you. Ship it out, and they mail it back. |

| Thanks for the replies. I attached an overhead pic of the reel on my original post so everyone could have a look. I like the idea of keeping it as is, however I'm concerned that by doing so the reel may rust or corrode quicker over time. I've seen some pretty nice paint jobs that have been done. Still debating on what to do. With that said tho, I've been wanting to learn for some time now how to airbrush, guess that time may have finally come. At least this way I would be able to paint my own lures too, another hobby I'd like to get into. If I do decide to do it on my own, or have someone paint it for me, I'll post some pictures of it when completed. Thanks. |

Location: WI | You might want to check into having the reel dipped in wet film. I've seen this done with gun parts, lures, and Ardent reels in Fish-O-Flage appear to have been dipped. |

Location: Perryville, MO | That's a tough first air-brushing project. If I did it, it would look worse than it does now. If you decide not to leave it the way it is (like others have said it's a cool story), and you really want it done well, take a look at the artistry of Calfish. Look him up on BBC Boards. I've got a couple of bass reels that he's painted and his work is second to none. |
