Posts: 109 | I've heard people talk about trolling jerk baits. If I were to put a sledge on while trolling can u just put the rod in the holder and it will dive and rise while u troll or do u hold the rod and jerk it as u go? Sorry can't get my mind wrapped around it. Also is there a certain speed to run when trolling them?

Posts: 20219 Location: oswego, il | Depends on the jerkbait. The articles I have read with the sledge its high speed trolling not holding the rod. That does not mean you couldn't slow down and pump the rod by hand. All accounts of quick trolling have been pumping the rod. I have caught fish pumping the rod using a tr twitcher. It really depends on the action of the bait in both situations.

Location: Eastern Ontario | I have trolled suicks and sledges and always hand held the rod giving it a semi rhythmic jerk or pull. A sledge works in a rod holder giving a slow side to side walk. I knew a guy that would speed troll very shallow water faster than I have ever seen anybody troll and a suick was used in a holder because it was the only lure he had found that would stay down. He caught lots of fish. Hard on lower units if you don't know the water.

Posts: 285 Location: NE Wisconsin | Many years ago, there was a group from Indiana, who trolled Bobbie Baits on LOW in the fall, while our group was there. If there were 3 guys in a boat, one would usually be jerking. They would troll shorelines with a string of boats., I have seen 4-6 boats in a row, trolling down a shoreline. Lets say the third boat hooked up, they would just pull out of line. Some jerked some did a slow pull but most did nothing. They caught a lot of fish. Saw them for many years, think most have passed by now. I haven't seen any Bobs as we used to call them, in years.

Posts: 864 Location: NE Ohio | sledges get down about 5' or 6' with about 40' of line out. we troll them allot in northeast ohio. they work great on or off a board, when the fish are suspended higher in the water column. we just put them in a rod holder and go. they have a lazy side to side kinda action that doesn't look like much but it does catch fish.

Try a glide bait. Hellhound and my favorite a big smuttly dog have really nice side to side action.

Posts: 556 | I troll a few different Drop Belly Glide baits -- most have a nice side to side action and slight roll when trolled at certain speeds---just have to play around and find out which ones work and how fast to troll them. Have caught some fish on them as well--and I also have trolled suicks but will pull the rod to get the action--a lot of work--but it can be done.
