| My son and I are getting a little frustrated trying to catch a musky in central Minnesota. I realize this is part of musky fishing but we've tried all summer without success. Even hired a guide for a half day on Mill Lacs without seeing a fish. We've been trying for a home run on Mill Lacs, Leech, and some of the smaller lakes in the area (Alexander,Wabedo,Little Boy, Plantagenat). I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations to help get the monkey of our backs. I'm not asking for 'Lake X' coordinates but any suggestions would be appreciated. Tried in line spinners/jerkbaits/topwaters/cranks. I may look into some suckers as the season gets colder. |

Location: New Hope MN | Stop lake jumping and learn 1 lake. Keep pounding it and experiment until you find a pattern. Then once you find a pattern, exploit it until it disappears. Then find a new one and repeat. Mille lacs will keep the skunk on you for the longest time. |

Location: MN | The only numbers lake in mn that I know of is dumbbell lake up by ely. Shoe pack strain so they won't be big. Mille lacs is one of the toughest lake in the state but it has big rewards. I'd stick to leech or plant if you aren't interested in shoe packs. |

Location: Contrarian Island | I agree w the other comment about lake hopping... learn 1 or 2 and figure out the structure/patterns etc... Plant is a great choice...easy as heck to fish and learn w plenty of fish. Little Wolf is small and can be fished easily...Look at the stocked lakes closest to where you live and learn 1.

Location: Ames, Iowa | Leech fits what you want. I know it's big but there are fish all over that lake. Boy Lake north of Longville might work for you too and it is much smaller. Wabedo and Little Boy aren't numbers lakes but they are big fish lakes. Leech is a big fish in a lot of places lake. Walker Bay in the Fall could be a trolling gold mine. Like the others said, spend more time on one lake and hit all the spots you read about or hear about. |
