Yesterday, even before starting my figure 8 I had a fat 40" come out of nowhere and t-boned my lure. I did not even see the fish strike, all I could do was hang on. It was a very violent collision. The bucktail ended up bent at a 90 degree angle after I cut the front hooks out of her mouth. The rod tip broke about 6-8" down from the top from the hookset. Has this ever happened to anyone?

Snapped one in half earlier this year on a hookset. Saw one broke in 3 pieces on a figure 8 hookset. 2nd was landed first one wasn't and still haunts me....

I've blow them on hooksets, casts, rips, etc. A lot of the time it's just a matter of a weak spot in the rod with lots of use.

I bet Geno Smith and Brian Vickers would not have busted that rod! Sorry could not resist, just carrying laundry up from the basement.:-). Hope its under warranty and you get it replaced for free. Could be a defect. I broke a new rod casting pounders a few weeks ago on the rods 5th cast.

I have fished with it maybe 5 times in a year and a half. The rod has only seen bucktails. This was the first and only fish I've hooked on it. I take care of my stuff. I shipped it out this morning. I'm hoping they dont say since I've had it 18 months that's its abuse. I know if a rod is defected it will break quickly but this was the first fish, the only time stress has been on it.

I haven't broken one on a fish yet. Broke 2 musky rods - both at the very start of the cast. One about 1/2 way between the tip and front of the cork, and the other about 6 inches down from the tip. Both rods had been used to cast heavy baits (within their rating though), and had caught at least one fish. Neither had lots of use.

I treat my stuff well also. Was it a defect, was it that my dog jumped on it or somebody else in the boat stepped on it? I'll never know. Stuff just happens sometimes.

If a rod has been banged, stepped on, smacked into another rod in travel, dinged on a door frame, or otherwise 'hit' in a manner that may cause failure, you may not be aware of it or remember it at all as usually the damage isn't spectacular...until it breaks under stress. Look over any of your rod blanks and find one a couple years old that isn't scarred up some.

I'm careful with mine too, but a two year old rod will be dinged up some. Most companies will cover a rod that has a break where it indicates a possible weakness. if the rod has been damaged, and broke at that point, some rod companies will cover the rod, and some will not.

Believe me, the rod has seen 'stress' if you have cast with it hundreds of times. Watch a rod blank flex when you cast sometime, it's amazing what the blank does loading up during a cast.

Sometimes stuff just breaks.

Yes but it was 20yrs ago and a cheapo "Muskie Rod" at least the bait shop called it a muskie rod at the time.

Broke a few. Couple things:

1. Never realized it until someone else here mentioned it, but don't use the hook keeper on your rod (if so equipped) The bottom of the blank gets pretty scored up after a while.

2. Sometimes you can't help it, (happens to me fishing after dark) but try to avoid whacking the rod on the boat.

I am hard on my gear. I take care of it and keep it all cleaned/oiled/etc. But I fish hard. Rods get beat up in the boat in rough weather, they get beat up in the chaos of hooking fish boatside, netting fish, in and out of the truck, etc. Your reels are metal and look at what happens to them just from being in the boat.

I've talked to a couple rod builders here and there and the consensus is pretty much that if there's a defect in the rod, it's going to break right away.

I think you'll be hard pressed to find anyone who has been at this for any length of time who has never broken a rod.

Great advice, drill a hole in the trigger, much better.
