Subject: Can We Make a Difference ??

Since I have lived up here in the Northwoods this past season along with enjoying this part of the country since I was 3 years old. I have seen the Musky Fishing at it's best from when I was small because there were not many Musky anglers then.
Then watched it decline a bit and now since Muskies Inc along with all us avid anglers teaching others proper handling & release methods I have been able to see it increase for the better.

My question is how can we as one help are fishery better? How can we get larger size limits ? A size limit of 40". I Moved to the Northwoods to enjoy the fishing as many of you do when you come here twice a year. Now that I moved from IL to Wisconsin to enjoy the life of fishing and farming I am spending more time in Minnesota because they have a great fishery. Now something is wrong with that picture, I don't want to sell and move to Minnesota I would like to try and make our home water fishery a better place.

What can we do as one to make this a better State to compare with Minnesota or Mich, for our Musky fishing. If it takes resort owners to talk to lets do it, if it takes the DNR lets do it. I have not ever attended a dnr meeting but will in the future.

Maybe some of you Guys & Gals can shead some light
on this for me. What can we do to improve the Wisconsin Fishery, I would like to catch fish like this one shown below on our own waters.

Jeff I wrote a big piece here to help you and then I got interuped and forgot to hit submit.. Dag Gammit!!

But to get to the point..

They would not let us increase the size limits on Pewaukee because too many large fish in the system would kill all of the other spieces. And they believe we have a balance system of small, medium and large muskies. We have a 99% release rate on the late, but the 1% is larger fish over 44" mostly.

They say if we put a 40" size limit on the lake the kill over 44" would not change. What would change is we would could only stock 100 fish every other year in order to keep the "trophy managament system in place".

As far as the Eagle River lake are concerned.. now thats a different ball game.. Lots of small fish with very few large fish.. Not a balanced fishery in my opinion, but thats just me. Your DNR manager might have to look at bait fish populations too as well as size limits. The fish I have caught off that water were all real skinny, seems too me they need more to eat. They were also very easy to catch and that tells me they need more to eat. You can catch 5 to six a day on the Eagle river chain with ease, but not too many over 38". Three lakes fish are healthy on the otherhand.

Great pics, Jeff.. Congrats on your fish.

Hello Jason,

Thank you for your reply, you are right in the past the Eagle River chain has produced alot of smaller skinner fish. But this year alone there has been 40% of the fish caught by Musky anglers have been over 38". I have seen the fish on this chain and also on the Three Lakes start to get alot bigger girths which is great. But I feel that if we all push for a higher size limit even as resort owners we will all be able to benefit from it. I agree with you this is a great place to catch 5 to 6 Muskies a day but three will be 38" and 3 smaller, it is always great to go out and know your going to catch a muskie but with knowing we only have (5) 50 + inch Muskies on this Chain that I know of anglers odds of catching that trophy become slim. As with this size of water I know we can hold a limit of 40" boy if we had that this would be even a greater place to fish. If you have or anyone else knows how we all can get a 40" limit please let me know how we can go about doing just that. Thank you for the compliment on the fish I was ready to go home after that fish I was so happy my biggest yet thus far hope I can top that when I come to Pewaukee.

I too fish quite a few lakes that don't harbor alot of large fish. We talk about raising limits and worry about too many fish and they eating up all the forage. One thing that troubles me in all of this is even in lakes I fish that don't produce large fish I find a tremendous amount of forage especially suspended. What I find troubling is that to me what I see in the water is plenty of food for these fish to get big. Some of these lakes with very large populations have large populations of other fish like bass or walleye or another specie. Yet they are not producing big musky. To me there must be other factors involved. Maybe the fish do not live that long in that system or some genetic problem that keeps them skinny and not in top condition. Maybe it's a behavior thing. It's speculation at best but by my observation it would seem to be more than just the forage base.
