Hello Musky nuts, been fishing these devils for 45 years but, I had an experience last Sunday that tops them all. I had a deep follow on one of my favorite spots and shoved the rod down three feet and did a long figure 8, fish is still on it. Came up about of foot and did some short jerks with the bucktail on the outside edge of the 8 and the musky rolled on the bucktail and went deep again. I shoved the rod down started the 8 and felt the fish, set hard. The fish stayed down and from the pull I thought I had a 50" for sure. This beauty was hooked about 6 inches in front of the tail.
Obviously the fight was something to behold. I told my partner the whole time the fish was on that we won't get this one, after quite a battle we did land the fish. A 49" beauty, technically snagged. Good healthy release. Just thought I would share this with my musky cohorts. Any of you have this happen?

I have been known to whack them with the rod tip and scare them off during the figure 8, but I have yet to snag one.

That takes talent!

Not Muskie but my 2nd ever Tarpon I caught casting did something simalar. She was 135# and smashed a plug. The plug was in the corner of mouth perfectly. I survived all the mayhem of jumps in the first 5 minutes and then the long runs. Nearing the end of the fight she again comes out of the water practically back flipping and throws the plug only to then somehow hook herself again in the dorsal fin. The fight got much harder and drawn out cause I could barely turn her. I was amazed the hooks didn't rip out but eventually I landed her. Pretty amazing story with such a big fish. Never thought I'd see something like that and still land her.....

congrats on a great fish! technically i don't think it was 'snagged'. i think foul hooked would be the term from the actions described above. i'm pretty sure snagging is a deliberate attempt to hook a fish seen or unseen that isn't interested in your offering. i've foul hooked many while trolling, head to tail, who knows how that happens. LOL. but never one casting. that had to be an awesome battle for sure.

I was pitching a tube bait last year and on the jig, felt a fish and exclaimed to my boat partners "Either I have the biggest fish I've ever hooked in my life, or I just snagged one in the butthole". It was a 35 incher. Snagged. In the butthole.

I snagged a 47 incher in the tail last fall ripping a flatstick through 6 feet of water. I thought I had hook a 50 pounder.

Hooked a 40" in the tail and back on a bulldawg. The dawg was new and had teeth marks on the head of the bait, fish must have missed and I set hook n got er in the back.

I have hooked fish and during the fight have the bait walk down the fish to its middle. The vertical jigging heyday on Webster 10 years ago seen alot of non mouth hooked fish.
