i don't recommend Ranger's advice....lol........i used to fish a river mouth where they stock and would always catch little 12 inchers while fishing for bass.

I don't want to sound mean, but...
First, what is the minimum size limit for taking a musky out of public water in your state? Remember that even a fingerling is covered by the law.
Second, consider the fish. Does it belong in an indoor aquarium? Shouldn't it be in a lake or river where it can swim around? To a wild fish, even a one acre farm pond is a lot better than even a fifty gallon aquarium.

I saw one in the Cabelas tank here in northwest Indiana a few weeks back that is only about 20". Our size limit is only 36" but I wonder how it got in there

Hopefully you have the following setup for your aquarium to properly maintain conditions for a muskie:

1) Well over 300G of water to keep it for the first few years. After that you will need much more.
2) Chiller and heating system to keep adequate temp control through all seasons to maintain dissolved O2 contents
3) Likely will need O2 injection system to maintain dissolved O2 content as well

All of this is expensive equipment. You are probably looking at 2000 just for chilling, heating and O2 injection. The aquarium itself will likely be another 2000. If you don't have these you are going to slowly kill a perfectly good game fish.

I did this; WI pet stores would not sell them. I had a pet store in Rockford IL order me a tiger Muskie about 4 inches. It cost 19.99 at the time. He was really had to keep. He keep getting fin rot from eating gold fish and shiners. I had him for about 3 years. HE WAS MEAN! It was tried to bite me when I cleaned the tank. He would follow the flash of my watch when I walked by. Was about 2 feet when he died. You need a huge tank. I had a 75-gallon and it was not big enough. You need like a 180. Lots of water flow (Power head). Would suggest a pre dilled tank with sump filter. If you could keep the water cool it would help. My water temp was in the 73-78 range. He didn't like it much in my apartment in August. You can buy water chiller for tanks. The tiger Muskie only moved in my tank when there was food. I kept and 20 gallon tank under my big tank with food. He was hard to keep! Good Luck!

This topic has been discussed many times on this board. Do a search and read what they say alot of good advice. If I was you I would pass on a musky/tiger that little 4 inch fingerling you will buy will be 2 ft long within 2 years and even in a 300 gal. tank it will be cramped.
My suggestion is do a search onlne and look up a red fin pickerel which will rarely exceed 10 inchs maximum in there lifetime alot easier to manage. They look like a tiger with bright red fins.

This topic comes up a few times a year and always gets the same responses. I had muskies in my 55 gallon tank for 3 years and they did just fine for a while. One died choking on a walleye that was almost the same size as it was. Another died when I had to move. Raised the one from 6" to 15". You can regulate their growth rate by controlling how much you feed them. They do just fine feeding them every 10 days or so. I'm sure certain people think it's inhumane and unethical or just plain wrong to keep a musky in a tank, but honestly who cares. When you buy them from a pet store they're no different than a gold fish and a hell of a lot more fun to watch feed!

I have a 75 gallon tank that for years had game fish in them. A few things that I can pass on are. They grow super fast and are more expensive to feed that my black lab. Change water regularly (ie weekly) or it gets so dirty that it is tough to keep up with. Muskies are cool to have, however if you want game fish Crappies I found were the easiest to keep, with a bullhead on the bottom to eat the scraps. Have a place to put them when they are to big, cause that will take less than a year. I didn't know any better at the time but Shady Oak lake in Hopkins has 6 leech lake strain ski's in it, betwwen 10-14 years old!

Seems like less work to go out in the garage and hit yourself in the head with a
hammer.

Stole that line from E.A. LOL.

Grass or Redfin pickerel is the only way to go. Muskie grow way too fast.
