Hello, I just picked up a used ABU 6600 SSC3 (basically a a C3 with thumb release, made in Sweden).. I'd like to pair it with a cheap rod to use as a back up and occasional sucker fishing or trolling... I would also use it occasionally for catfish. Would the Ugly Stik Catfish rod have enough backbone for this? I like the price and durability- it also looks nice paired together.. Not looking for a 100+ dollar rod, just a cheapo to soak suckers and have as a back-up/trolling rig. I can order it for 30 bucks online. I've also seen the tigers and tiger lites, but they are twice the cost.. and if I'm going to spend that, I would be looking at other options as well. Thanks. (looking at this rod specifically: http://www.overtons.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?pdesc=Shakespea... )

Posts: 157 Location: Lincoln, NE | I don't sucker fish but I think it would work fine for suckers. It's probably a little light for trolling unless you only troll small baits. It's going to bend like a horseshoe with bigger baits. It's plenty strong, I've caught 45 pound blue cats on them but I couldn't control the cat, it took everything the rod had just to keep it from running into snags. I don't think it'll break but it will be like driving a 1000hp car on a gravel road. If you're trolling 6-8" baits it could work but I remember putting a 10" jake on one once and it bent the rod too much. I couldn't imagine what a 12" Custom X would do to it. I think the Shimano TDR rods are like $30 and a lot of people use those for trolling, you might want to look into them. Otherwise yeah the Tiger's have more backbone, or the Big Water Ugly Sticks. The 8' H has a similar action to my St. Croix Classic Cat which is the same as the Premier glass series now. But it's obviously heavier and a 2 piece but about 1/3 the price.

Posts: 30 | Get the one piece 7ft. They are heavy. 8ft 2piece is heavier, and you loose sensitivity. I use these for trolling one line and I find them to be fantastic. I have 3 on 3 different reel setups a for different size lures. The 7ft can handle everything; rapala DTs to 12" custom x. It's not the fastest action so setting hooks requires quite a bit more of an exaggerated movement. But, you won't loose them once the hooks are in.
