Soooo...I just bought two Salty S-10 rod holders. Did not get a chance to use them yet because I am waiting for my mounting plates.

How "vertical" can I go with these? Seems like it would be pretty easy for these to end up in Davy Jones locker if I run them that way.

I'm using 8' Shimamo Heavy TDR trolling rods if that helps.

How much of the rod should be submerged to fend off weeds. I'm going to use these for short-line/prop wash and close to boat trolling (not long line or planer boards).

Do I need some kind of tether system ?

i always run my rods so there is 2 or 3 eyes below the surface. i don't run any down rods vertical. i have S10's and love them. tip - take them off in the winter, it helps keep the original shape. i have some i didn't do this with and they ended up permanately curved open.

I run a down rod just shy of 90 degrees. As long there's pressure on the rod I have no worries of a rod jumping out of the holder. If your afraid of losing a rod then run a dog leash.

As said, as long as there's pressure on the rod the clamps won't open. With that said remember to relieve the pressure to pull the rod back out when a fish strikes
