Posts: 243 Location: South Central Wisconsin | Has there been any scientific research done on fighting muskies and the delayed mortality rate due to the stress of the fight length? What I'm getting at is, there is a real push to tire muskies fast and get them back in the water. At any rate, muskies need to get to a point to "give up", before netting them. Either you tire them super fast by fighting hard, or you slow down a little, within reason, and get the same result at their same state of exhaustion. So, is it better to run a sprint, or a nice jog? Am I missing something? Any research on this? Thanks in advance! Edited by Randy 6/27/2014 1:50 PM

Posts: 1828 | This doesn't answer your question, but I don't really tire them out to the point that they "give up". In fact I net them [almost] as soon as possible. Seems like they'll give you one hard gator roll or a couple thrashes in the net, and then cool down. Especially when they're belly-down and fully submerged, they're usually pretty relaxed in the net for me regardless of the fight length. This is not research, but maybe related. Comparing sprinting until you're "spent" to jogging until you're "spent" - I think you recover faster from the sprint.

Posts: 2065 | don't know about research but earlier this week I just caught a fish for the 4th time since 2009.... I get them to the net reasonably quick. C&R works!

Posts: 2687 Location: Hayward, WI | Again this isn't based on scientific research, but I think the quicker the better. Muscling them in with musky tackle and putting them in the net as soon as they give an opportunity tends to go pretty fast. Waiting till they are exhausted takes a while longer. I'd say most fish I net still would have a lot of fight still in them if left to fight longer. I like when I pick them out of the net for a picture and they have that firm, ready to take off feeling. Drop them back in the water and they are pretty much ready to take off. IAJustin, that's cool! I only know of one fish that I have for sure caught twice. Tucker

Posts: 20248 Location: oswego, il | I dont know the correct answer but a green musky in the net will gator roll his head and your lure into a nice time consuming head out of water experience for the fish and that's cutting the hooks. Edited by ToddM 6/27/2014 3:55 PM

Posts: 243 Location: South Central Wisconsin | I'm not a newbie to this sport my any means and have caught and released my share. How much "green", is too much? Like Todd said, they're going to roll which causes more time out of water in the net. Sometimes you see these guys wrestling them like the bass guys do. It seems more like small man syndrome trying to kick a muskies butt. Then we have to read threads about why did I lose this 50+"er? Lol

Posts: 2687 Location: Hayward, WI | Well, as with everything I think there is a happy medium. Like reading a follow and reading how the fish is reacting. I don't try to net every one in 3 seconds, but I put them in the net at the first calm opportunity. If they are going nuts I don't net them. If they are starting to relax I net them, but I try to keep the overall fight as short as possible, within reason.

Location: Contrarian Island | faster the better in my book, I err on the side of horsing them...imo the longer you play them the better chance they have of shaking the hooks... get em to the net...pronto! ![]()

Posts: 134 | What's the point of pretty standard 80lb line and leader if your not "Getting em to the net" Hooks are cheap....if they gator roll and get caught up go for the split rings first and de-tach the fish from the bait...and then you only have 1 or 2 hooks to cut to get them to drop into the bag.

Posts: 558 | My buddies and i are trained Ninja netmen. Net them asap. Like BNelson said do you want them to shake it or put them in the net. Sooner the better for the fish. Edited by Musky Face 6/27/2014 9:56 PM

Location: Northern Wisconsin | Net as soon as possible. They are going to roll and thrash in the net regardless of how long they fought. I have never had an issue with tangles with the Frabil coate bag.
