Got back down for the 5-6th time to fish with SFP Fishing Outfitters Captain Jon Sebold and Captain Todd Hadley. I've become good friends with these guys and everytime I'm blown away at their fishing ability! These are two of the best fisherman I know. We fished the Salt for migrating Tarpon and found them on shallow sand flats. This was some of the most technical spot on fishing I've ever experienced. All sight casting moving fish and casts were anywhere from 10-75 yards. You had to lead the fish and time it just right to get a lure 1-2 feet in front of them and fleeing away. If ya did it right they ate....too close or not right angle they would spook. Too far and they wouldn't even bother. Captain Jon and Todd were so dialed in they could predict the path of fish, if they were making slight left or right turns and time it just right with trolling motor, wind and tide to give me the perfect shot. Sounds pretty easy, huh? Absolutely not!! To spot the pods, doubles or singles migrating you'd had to get high up on the baitwell/cooler/lean post on a bay boat, balance in the 1-4 foot swells, strong tide and big winds and then make dead on accurate casts long distances every time. Super challenging but so rewarding!! I got several to eat and spit it right away. I got many interested and follow only to run out of room and spook seeing boat. I also scared a bunch casting too close and even got them to give me the fin when I casted too far from them. The best part was getting 2 130#ers with the perfect cast, twitch twitch, kaboom!!! Fish on! Sets of amazing jumps, having to chase them down cause they practically took off into the gulf headed for what seemed like Mexico. Got line back and fought'em. I had 1.5 half days that was nasty and tough fishing but snuck into the backcountry and stalked 40# males. Found 3 in a tiny lagoon and focused on one guy. Would wait for the roll every 5 minutes, watch bubble trail and cast. I must have casted to him 4-6 times with nothing. Finally made another cast, let lure sink, twitch, twitch, twitch, fish on! I swear this fish got high enough in air I was looking up at him! Such cool stuff to actually hunt down a specific fish. All in all another successful, highly educational and absolutely crazy addicting trip! Such a different game in the salt vs Everglades and the only part of being a Muskie angler that helped me was the never give up attitude and willingness to constantly fish. Chasing Muskie were not sight casting to moving fish every 5-10 minutes and trying to predict distance, speed and direction. It's so important to practice if your gonna do a trip like this. Fly was my first plan but it was way too windy for me. Would have had plenty of shots at Permit if they wind would have laid down a bit as well. Captain Jon Sebold and Captain Todd Hadley have 20+ years experience fishig the SW area and you need this type of experience to have countless back up plans when the weather goes to crap! They both had so many spots that you wouldn't see a sole and all the Tarpon to yourself. These guys are class acts and do it right! Very professional and fishing kings in that area in my opinion. They literally guide 300+ days a year and always on the water. It keeps having me come back several times a year cause we always succeed and lots of fun!! Sorry for the long post but I know some guys on here have the Tarpon/Saltwater bug just as bad as me and would like to hear about another amazing Tarpon trip with SFP Fishing Outfitters. It's in my blood...I can't not go..these amazing guides have turned me on to a whole other world of fishing that has trumped any other angling I've done. It keeps me coming back for more. If anyone wants more details feel free to PM me. I'd be glad to give all the details of lodging, cost, etc etc. Worth every penny!! A big warning though....it's very very addicting and will make you reconsider every "fishing trip" you've taken chasing Muskie. It's one of the ultimate games hunting down these silver kings with fly, plug, sight etc etc. You just can't get enough of all the action these guys put you on!!
