My son and I just purchased a new boat and got the 112 thrust terrova with ilink. While out fishing this weekend I hit the spot lock and was fishing from the back of the boat when I heard a squeak. The trolling motor had spun all the way around several times and was ripping out the cables. It broke the transducer cable. Minnkota has hooked me up with a service center to get it repaired but it was only the 4th time on the water. We had been out about 5 hours or so. The Minnkota rep said spinning can be caused by low voltage but I thought we should be able to get more time with 36 volts? I love the way the motor works and hope I don't have issues like this going forward. Anyone know how to check the voltage coming out of the plug?
Thanks for your help

It also happens with a sticky footpedal. Mine is 4 years old and spins itself frequently. I assume MinnKota is footing the bill for the damage?

With a 36 volt Terrova on my 19' glass bass boat, I get at least 2 long days from my 101 before it starts showing power loss.

To get voltage I assume you just get a voltmeter and touch red to positive and black to negative. Or just take it to a Battery Store and have them check it for you.

Thanks for the feedback. We have an Alumacraft Trophy 185 so it should weigh a little less than your glass boat and we had figured we should get more than one day on a charge.

Yes, it is covered under the warranty but I was hoping that I didn't have to pay attention when I put it on Spot lock. Seems that is the whole point.

I had the same issue with mine but didn't do any damage. The motor would just keep spinning in same direction and I would quickly unplug it. It was very random. Maybe every fifth time I hit spot lock. I did not have the foot pedal hooked up.

I know this is no help but after the first few trips it stopped doing it and I didn't change anything.

Were the batteries fully charged before you went out that day?

Yes the we took the charger off just before we left for the lake so they were fully charged.

I am glad I read your post! I will allow more length on my link cable. I forgot about the spinning around on spotlock!

the first day out with mine last year, I had spot lock on and it wrapped around itself…instead of unwinding like it's supposed to it tore the plastic collar off the shaft. I watch it very closely with spot lock on to make sure it doesn't wrap around itself…kinda sucks but still a cool feature

I had my pedal go to hell on me last fall. Was fishing in light rain and noticed when I would tap the left turn button on foot pedal it would stick a little bit longer each time. All the sudden the motor turned itself on to constant thrust and kept spinning counter clockwise. Thankfully it was last day of season and the weekend trip for the boat so I just unplugged the pedal and used the remote. Minn Kota covered pedal under warranty. Motor was only new last season.

Check your pedal
