Random quote: Muskies are nasty. They stink. They taste bad. They are hard to catch and will disappoint even the most devoted angler. The lures required cost more than some women's jewelry. The rods and reels require a remortgage of the house. The boat is always worth more than the tow vehicle. Sure beats the hell out of golf.

Hey everyone,

My name is Brandon and im extremely green when it comes to this. I just recently started making my own wood top water "Walk the dog" bait but i have ran into two critical issues. Im not the best when it comes to painting or drawing. To tell you the truth I am horrible. I saw something about True Image designs and searched hard to try to find them online with no success. Is there a company that sells these designs / templates or is the best bet to find someone artistic to draw them out or should I just start practicing my painting? My second issue revolves around weighting the lure for optimal movement and water displacement. I was considering drilling a hole in the rear of the lure and melting lead but I plan to have a hook there and dont want that hooks strength to be compromised where it is placed on the lure. Or would the clear coat itself add enough weight to it?

I am a newbie and I know I probably asked some pretty stupid questions but any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your time.

If you are going to weight your gliders you can start by drilling at about 1" back from the nose and about 2" from the rear on a 6" bait. Holes will be in the 3/8" diam. range. If you don't want to pour your lead then get some lead off ebay that are used for spinners and cut the length you need. You could also pick some egg sinkers local to use. You will need to play around with depth, hole spacing and lead amount to get floating up to sinking baits. Weighting the baits keeps them belly down. I take my cigar style bare blank and put it in water to see where the blanks heaviest grain is. The heavier grain will belly down and that's where I mark for my drilling and weighting. I take the blank out and let it set for awhile to dry out from any water it absorbed. You can not do that with a flat sided bait though. Good luck

Thanks a lot of the help TurkeyT. What you said worked perfect to solve my weight issue. Was a little easier than I thought to melt the lead and pour it into the bait. I was also able to find a local company that can print a design onto a form of water transfer decal paper. Got my primer on (2 coats) and got my first coat of a base colour that will help hide the edges of my "Cropped picture".

Again I cant thank you enough!

So this is the outcome so far. My first lure. Constructive criticism and tips are welcome!

Before first clear coat.

During first clear coat.
