I looking for a wire former that will handle making 10 inch baits I contacted boggs and they said their extended one would only make about 7in baits does that sound right. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I amtrying to make something similar to the cowgirl or xx. Just need something for making the loop and the wraps on the end. Thanks

Call Reinke Brothers in Milwaukee 414 383 5591
Tell them Beaver sent you.
Buy a coil of wire. They have it up to I don't know what poundage, but check that the diameter of the wire will fit through the diameter of your components. It's cheaper by the coil, and you can cut it to what ever length you want.
I buy all my wire from them, for leaders and for bucktails.

Stanmina has a wire forming tool from Hagens that you can bend any size or length of bucktails you want. If you get one you will also need the .051 conversion kit so you can bend the heavy wire. I have used one for the past 2 years and I am very happy with it.

Forgot to address the question. Thought you were looking for longer wire.
I've been making bucktails for years and can wrap as much or as little as I want, and all I need is a nail that is pounded in my work bench and a pair of vise grips. I cut the wire longer that needed, the wrap the wire around the nail to form a perfectly round loop, then grab the very end of the loop with the vise grips and then wind the excess around the shaft with my fingers and then trim the extra. Never saw the need for a tool to make a couple of loops when I can do the same thing without one.

I use .051 wire and any decent round nose pliers can be used to make a nice loop. They sell them at Sears or most of the places that sell components...like Moore's, Stamina's, ect. It sounds like Beaver's nail will work just fine, also. No need to buy an expensive wire bending tool.

You can actually make any length bucktail you want with the standard sized boggs. When you go to wrap the tag end of the wire around the main shaft, you just have to flip the bait over each 1/2 turn. It might sound a little complicated, but it isn't. You can make baits 20" long if you want. If you have any other questions feel free to send me a PM or an email.

When you buy wire by the coil, don't you have to straighten it out. I've always had difficulty getting a nice, straigt wire. Anyone have any suggestions. Thanks

Beav, I'm with you in both respects.

As far as straightening the wire. I just put one end in my vice grip, and then run it through my fingers a few times, putting a little pressure going the opposite direction of the curve. Works fine.

Do they make coil spring fasteners to fit .051" wire forms?
I only found them too fit up to .040" wire forms.

I have always used the Knipex round nose pliers for making loops, it does a great job.

As far as wire, I generally get the pre cut from Moore's who is a great source for all the components to make your own bucktails.

My buddy and I recently rebuilt a few dozen buck tails from some old parts (we replaced the worn out pieces). As the one poster noted above, all you need is the Bogg's. We went back and forth, but the Bogg's is more than fine. The Hagen's is over $150 with the conversion kit (approaching $200 if I remember). As noted, with the Bogg's, you have to reset the bait every 1/2-3/4 turn, but once you get used to it...it takes a split second to finish off a bait. If you are looking at cranking out your own buck tails and not mass production, the Bogg's will meet your needs and is small enough to bring on a fishing trip to whip up a "hot color" when you get to the lake.
